Im just starting out and confused on which float to get.
I will be mainly shore diving some rock hopping.
I like the IST torpedo inflatable.
Would this be a good choic?

Take a look at this.

I'm a big believer in being self contained and this really helps in that regard. I do a bit of rock hopping too. I basically suit up at my car then tote the buoy in using the shoulder strap from an old duffel bag, you can comfortably wear the buoy as a kind of backpack.

I have a float line on a winder and adjust the length according to how deep I am diving, the buoy is attached to my speargun, I know that this is perhaps not always the done thing in the UK as we don't have massive fish but it is good to know I can drop the gun whenever suits me (for instance if I find a crab or lobster) and I can retrieve it up top.

In short, buoys of this style are brilliant, they glide through the water easily and you can attach your stringer, torch etc to the underside of the buoy and you can carry a flask of hotwets in the pouch on top of the buoy, you can even lean on the buoy for a wee rest.

Yes, I think the simple, inexpensive torpedo float - which you can quickly inflate by mouth - is optimal for UK shore spearing. It's small and light to carry* - and you can get one as big as you feel you need (I'd suggest medium, or perhaps large). You usually need to add some balast (e.g. wheel balancing leads, strips of lead sheet or a small dive weight) to the bottom to keep the flag upright. Mine has lasted for years and only had to fix a puncture once (with a bike tyre patch).

*A small swimming kit bag - ideally with thick cord draw string that doubles as shoulder straps - is a cheap, simple & effective way to carry your bits & pieces to the beach. Don't leave any expensive gear on/near the beach (a young mother who sat with a small group near us on a beach stole my son's rock pool net on one trip - hardly worth committing a crime for).
