Dotey asked me for a link that I had about footpockets, so I dug it up. I never took the time to really go through the site. Still haven't really, it's a Ukranian site, so it will take some time to get through. There are some very interesting pics on the site, for example: Воспоминание о соме <-- Some big fish in that link!

The main site is Хрустальный Грот. It's all in Russian, or Ukrainian (not sure the difference in language, I think they have their own, but most speak Russian too and it's related I believe). So the site will need some translation, but it looks like an interesting collection of information.

I've always been interested in Russia and the old USSR. As a kid, that part of the world was always behind this secret curtain, they were EVIL for pete's sake! Not really evil, but it was cold war, so, you know how it was. There are so many interesting buildings and history there, it's amazing to me!

Enjoy, I know I will. I'm hoping to learn more about another areas culture related to diving and spearing!

That looks like a Burbot, or Freshwater Lingcod as they're called here in Western Canada. I could be wrong. That thing is friggin huge though! usually around 5 to 10 lbs from what I've seen. Anglers throw them back because they're so fugly, but they really are good to eat.

Yes, Ukrainian and Russian are very close, almost identical, although most Ukrainians will certainly tell you they are quite different :)

If you are interested in websites of the former CCCP and can read some cyrillic (well, Google translation also works), you will indeed find a lot of very interesting information on numerous websites from this region. You can find a bunch of them for example here:

Russian @ APNEA.cz
Ukrainian @ APNEA.cz
Estonian @ APNEA.cz
Lithuanian @ APNEA.cz

There are also many other interesting websites in other countries of the former Eastern block - Czech, Slovak, Polish, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Serbian,...

Czech @ APNEA.cz
Slovak @ APNEA.cz
Polish @ APNEA.cz
Hungarian @ APNEA.cz
Bulgarian @ APNEA.cz
Serbo-Croatian @ APNEA.cz

It often happens to me that I find there information not available on English of French speaking websites.

The land over there just seems so rugged and remote. The cities appear like walking back into time. That is true in a lot of European countries I know. But like I said, the mystery of the "USSR" interests me. I know there are hard feelings with Ukraine and other Soviet block countries. I met a girl in Florida last summer that was from a small island near Russia. To mention Russia nearly brought tears. She admittedly denied association with Russia. I never really studied all the events in that regions past to know why. I knew Stalin did some bad things, just never knew how bad.

By coincidence, History Channel JUST ran a show on Stalin's Moscow as I was checking out this site. Impressive work, but what a toll!
