The Angels will be introducing a simple underwater comms system this coming saltFree weekend. Much thanks goes to Paul Streeter for his informative and generous advice.

We have 6 pairs of 'bang sticks' to begin with ... more to come. Each support diver will ultimately have a pair.

This weekend the bang sticks will be used by the support divers staged at 10m intervals. These will be the Arch Angels (experienced) on Saturday and the Cherubs (in training) on Sunday.

To keep things simple to begin with the code will be:

3 taps - to indicate a freediver is OK and is passing a safety diver.

Continuous tapping - abort dive.

Further discussion welcomed and encouraged this weekend. :)

Laura,

I believe some scuba divers use dog training 'clicker' devices underwater effectively for short range communication. It'll leave one hand free.

Also, some rope signals for low viz divers are
1 pull: okay? okay
2 pulls: stay put. I am stationary
3 pulls: go down. Going down (alternatively: move away. moving away)
4 pulls: come up. Coming up (alternatively: come closer. coming closer)
5 pulls / continuous: emergency! help! etc.

Just some suggestions.

Greets from California!

Hi Peter
Thanks for your suggestion about clicker device. I'll explore that one as well. Hope all is well with you ... maybe see you later this year somewhere in the blue :)

Hi Laura

Martin and I were chatting about bang sticks and I said clickers may be a good option as it leaves a hand free. Or, one bang stick with some sort of small plate on divers wrist/thigh to bang it on? We tried banging a stick on a slate in Sharm - wasn't quite the desired sound but worked - kind of...

Just some thoughts....
