I am an undergraduate I am considering building a small, relatively simple ROV (controllable underwater video camera) for my major project. The question is whether there is a market for it. I was wondering whether anyone had an opinion on that and how much divers might be prepared to spend. It would plug directly into your laptop and display live video footage on screen. You could control it with the keyboard.

MrVain,

Take a look at this site: www.atlantiscamera.com for an example of what's out there and a price point for reference.

I came across this a few months ago after someone on a 1500+ divers list posted about it. So a sample for recreational divers can be, let's say, 1 in 1500 would buy this, because I think most diver would just go down and find out instead of looking at a camera beforehand - part of the discovery and fun of diving!

I think there is a better market for what you're proposing with professional divers - biologists, oceanographers, search & rescue, where people may need to do a quick survey of the ocean and may not want to gear up and go down all the time.

Hope this helps,

Peter S.

Divers, prepared to spend.
The two are mutually exclusive :) .
There are several companies offering lower cost ROV's. VideoRay is one but as the previous post said your market is far more likely to be commercial rather than recreational scuba.
Good luck with your project.

You may also find a market with anglers...

If the ROV is equipped with weapons systems it would be even better. That way you could spear dangerous fish or annoying SCUBA divers without even getting in the water.
