Close to 70 people were still missing in the beach paradise on Monday as search operations continued into the night, and officials said they feared the death toll could rise dramatically.

You are correct, although the term tidal wave has been widely used in many news reports.

A tsunami is a wave train, or series of waves, generated in a body of water by an impulsive disturbance that displaces the water column vertically, in this case, caused by an earthquake.

At the end of the day it doesn't really matter, what matters are the lives lost and destruction caused, whether called a freak wave, tsunami, or tidal wave.

Lots of people are hurting right now and its important to try and assist if you possibly can.

Thanks to all for your efforts and positive thoughts.

Tsunami Threatens Survival of Maldives

29 December 2004

The tidal waves that swept across the Indian Ocean did more than take a heavy toll of lives and property in the Maldives -- it confronted the tiny island nation with a threat to its survival. The archipelago of 1,190 low-lying coral islands, dotted across hundreds of miles of ocean, has for years begged bigger, more powerful nations for action against global warming, fearing higher sea levels could literally make much of its territory disappear. The speeding walls of water that slammed into 11 nations in Asia and Africa on Sunday, killing tens of thousands of people, marked a brutal demonstration of vulnerability.
