sorry if there was a discussion anywhere on this, did a few searches but didnt turn up anything really.

when i do longer aspettos while spearfishing in 50+ feet, sometimes on surfacing, maybe 20 - 25 secs into contractions, i have a very strong urge to cough, sometimes stronger than my urge to breath, sometimes i can surpress it, other times, i just have to cough, before breathing, and this leaves me feeling pretty empty of whatever is left in my lungs, is this in any way normal? i start to get the urge to cough in the last 5 feet before i surface or so..

i dont have athsma, dont smoke, dont drink, ect. i do have a bit of a sinus problem while diving, but i cant think of any way that the coughing is related to that.

anyone else have this problem?

Did you look at your phlem when coughing? was it bloody/pink/orange?
Do you dive with the snorkel in your mouth?
Could it be that you get some water in your mouth/back of throat while diving?

Hi Sickie.
I have some coughing on accent after a long break(from diving), i blame it on the breathing through the mouth via snorkel drying the bronchial bit(sorry not very medical) :) it goes after a while with me though.

no blood, its more of a dry cough... i do dive the first few feet with the snorkle in my mouth sometimes, before i remember to kick it out.. hmn.. i'll do a few dives and see if there is any relation to that
