I'm sure that Deeper Blue will soon have an official announcement about this tragic news.

Reports from Vertical Blue 2013 state that Nicholas Mevoli reached his announced depth of 72m in an attempt on the US men's CNF record, returned to the surface, and then lost consciousness during his surface protocol.

Despite immediate emergency medical procedures, Nicholas lost his life today. The freediving community has lost an incredibly talented and passionate freediver. My heart goes out to all who have been touched by Nic's spirit.

RIP my friend.

Good op/ed. Minor errors of fact, but the gist and emotional description is very good. Always suspected I was an adrenalin junkie.

Sorry Connor, but I think the article is rather poor. If I were an adrenalin junkie I would be base jumping or whatever. And diving solo in caves is not what the average freediver does but I'd call it rather suicidal. And somebody who writes "Even as the weight of water begins to squeeze your limbs and organs" has clearly a lack of education. Also from this article it seems as if Nicholas died just lying in the water, which is definitely not true.

Rest in peace Nick.

Inappropriate place for the adrenalin junkie comment, my apologies.
Azrael, will PM later.
