Are there any good US destinations anyone would recommend as somewhere close to practice diving - other than wrecks? Hopefully a place with good marine life?

the la jolla reserve is really nice. alot of scuba divers practice out of la jolla shores.

East coast of South Florida. First reef is about 50 yards from the beach in 20' of water, you can be in 200' of water 2 miles from shore. As for boat diving, from Jupiter, FL south to the FL Keys is great. Winter time is more hit/miss with "cold fronts" coming through. Not really cold for those who live in cold places but the wind picks up strong and blows out for diving.

The Monterey area has lots of areas to practice - shore dives off of Del Monte beach and the Breakwall are common sites. Both tend to be very well-traveled by divers, but it's pretty and there are critters around.

It depends on what you are used to and looking for. For tropical diving, if you haven't been further down in the Caribbean, the Florida Keys have a ton of good diving, free or scuba, lots of life, take your pick. Once you zero in on an area and type of diving, lots of DBers will be able to give you more detailed info.

Peninsula of Mexico known as the Yucatan , consists of limestone.
here you can dive with a wide variety of tropical fish, huge barrel
sponges, mountains of star coral, gorgonians and much more while comfortably suspended in warm Caribbean waters.

The North Shore of Massachusetts, for that matter all of Massachusetts Bay has spectacular scenery (assuming the vis is better than 20 feet) with the added benefit that you can bring home a bunch of lobster! Call me if you come, I've got a license and am always looking for an excuse to dive.
