valsalva w/open mouth?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

hi, i have a disagreement with a colleague: she says it's impossible to equalize valsalva if the mouth is kept open. i disagree.
who is right?

Yes, you can do both Valsalva and Frenzel with open mouth without problems. Hold on, I find a picture clearly demonstrating it.

As you can see, it is actually easier to do Valsalva with mouth open than with Frenzel - with Frenzel you have to block the soft palate against the tongue, to avoid air escaping out through the mouth, and have then smaller part of the tongue available for the compression.

yes, this was exactly my point, but it's very useful to have the picture! thanks!
 
however, when i do frenzel open mouth, i don't lock the tip of the tongue against the roof of the mouth, but the middle part.

Yes, you can also do it with just the back part - that's possible too.
