I have had limited success with the vented doc plugs. Seeing a guy next week who makes custom plugs (I've had them made for surfing before from him.. but they are unvented so no good for diving).

Going to discuss options re. plugs for spearing. Has anyone else had custom vented plugs made? ... or any comments / problems you can see.

I guesse there are two issues / aims.

1) keep sand etc out... scrathes from sand are the cause of some of the infections... and my ears are always full of sand when I don't wear plugs.

2) keep dry?.... how is this possible with a vented plug?

like many of the others on here my ears are pretty shot from years of surfing.. and trying to preserve what i have and avoid the drilling! Ear infections now are nearly always due to spearing without plugs.

Hello Pav
I don`t know if these are the same plugs but if they are...

I have been using these at work for 12 or so years and they are custom made by Emtec.

They won`t keep water out and the little holes which are for allowing higher frequency noises through(talking and yelling) are minute and will plug easily usually with ear wax. The holes are not straight either so are difficult to clean. Sand in them would be very difficult. They have covers for the holes but these are not for keeping ears dry.

If someone is making them with a semi permeable membrane thats news to me!

There is a mask manufacturer that makes a very cool mask that has ear covers that are linked to the nose dam so equalising etc is not a problem. I will hunt for a link to them for you.

Here it is!! http://en.istsports.com/product-19.aspx

For a long time, if I dove more than once a week, pouring a solution in the ear before diving has worked well. About six years ago I discovered Doc's plugs and now dive when the outer ear is sensitive by filling the ear and using the plugs. There seems to be a lot of exchange during the day because I don't smell the solution when the plugs are removed but it works.
