Having just aquired a quantity of teak via an ebay bargin I've been mulling over the design for my next gun.
My question is this, has anyone had experience of shooting or building a gun with the band holes drilled verticaly as opposed to the more usual horizontal configuration? are there any issues with recoil or general handling?.

Many thanks.

Incase anyone didn't understand what I ment by vertical bands this may help.

No that should be fine, in fact it gives you a little more rubber & in theory a little more power.
The last couple of guns I have built have had very thin muzzles & just a 6mm hole to attach the bands with dyneema in the same fashion as the wishbone end.
you could consider a roller end too as there are several roller muzzles on the market.

A roller gun is an option however I'm all for simplicity when I'm in the water, having said that I will build one one day. My main concern with the vertical bands is at the end of the shooting cycle, the bands will try to straighten. will this cause the tail of the spear to lift and end up shooting low?

The spear will be at peak acceleration & the band at near relaxed state so I can't imagine that would be an issue!
I believe the spear tail will be long gone before the band could effect its trajectory.

I think best thing will be to give it a go. If I'm not happy with it I'll fit some stainless retainers to alter the angle of the bands to lie parallel to the shaft.

Good idea although there are lots of guns fitted with band lifter or hammerhead muzzles, my brother OMD own gun had some fitted & he said it was the most accurate gun he had ever owned!
just try it out ,,, personally I am swaying away from bulky muzzles but it depends on what you intend to use the gun for..

I know what you mean. I was going to do a "cuttlefish" style gun but I saw some nice designs for this type of muzzle on Youtube, still I've got enough timber for about 5 guns so i may do one of each! Decisions, decisions.

I had to change a broken composite gun so.... this is it !
