I just heard the news of the sad passing of Dimitris Vassilakis. He had died during a spearfishing trip. Dimitri was an A level AIDA Judge and was one of the most experienced judges around, but more importantly he was a top bloke. He has judged at nearly every competition I have attended and I always enjoyed our chats at each, he was someone that you instantly took a liking to. I offer my condolences to all family, friends and fellow freedivers that knew this great man.

Although this is the first time I ever hear of this guy, but in this deep sadness, all my condolences go to his family and his beloved one and I wish them all the strength in this tragedy...

Best regards

Dimi was a lovely man. Kind, clever, cultured, thoughtful and always fair. He was a top AIDA Judge, a high level doctor in his field (lungs) but a quiet, calm man with no ego problem whatsoever.

I knew him a little through judging together, being judged by him and spending some fun time together in Nice 05. He was someone you were always happy to see or hear from.

I'm shocked and sad to hear that we have lost him. He will be sorely missed.

Love, peace and thoughts to all who knew him and enjoyed his company.

Sam

Can't believe this news.
We spent almost 3 weeks freediving, spearfishing, talking and eating with Dimitris in the Bahamas in April and he was both intelligent and soft-mannered. A tragic loss. Condolences to his family and the community of Greek freedivers and spearfishers.

Will.

This is sad indeed, I never met him, but just hearing your opinions of him makes me feel sad as well. I offer my deepest condolences to his family and friends. There are too many of us going too quickly.

This is very, very sad news. I met Dimi when I was safety in Hurghada 06. I instantly liked him and looked up to him because he was such an inspiring person.

My thoughts are with his family and all friends. We will miss him.

This is a tragic loss!

I'm a bit irritated with the AIDA International web site, they only have the information as a little blurb on the right side of the page with Natalia's 2 month old photo on the front.

This is no way to respect such a well known and liked figure in our community!

He was a wonderful and kind person and will be missed by many.

I´m very sad. He was a great guy. I met him in Hurghada during WC 2006. He was a great guy. I´m sorry for everybody who knew him.

Anyone knows more about the detail of his passing away ?
Only what has been contributed by Grant Graves on the AIDA Judges forum - from what they have been told he was out fishing with 2 friends on a rib and they ended up diving each on their own. Dimitris was late meeting up with the other guys, they went looking for him and found his speargun at 7m and found him nearby at 30m.
I feel absolutely gutted this morning. But today is the first day in a week that the sun is out so I might head down to the beach and think some nice thoughts of our mate.

Bummer....Sounds like a victim of a SWB....We are warned and warned about not going solo. Unfortunantely some of us do it on a fairly regular basis though - Its the love/addiction of the sport that pushes us there.

It sounds like he had TWO buddies with him but they seperated...

I'm a newbie pretty much....This scares me that a man with many years of experience has died like this...A man who probably for sure knew better than to dive solo.

My condolances go out to his family.

I am very sorry to hear of Dimitris' passing. My condolences to family and friends. I met Dimitris in the Bahamas and spent a couple weeks sharing in wonderful times spearfishing, chatting, discussing freediving, eating good food, and taking underwater photos. He was a delightful man to spend time with and we quickly became friends. I would post some photos but unfortunately somebody stole my laptop which contained them all recently. I had looked forward to seeing him again in the future and believed I would as we had discussed the possibility of working on tests to expand areas of knowledge in freediving. Just communicating with him recently over email, this comes as an unreal circumstance. You will be missed and sending my love out to the world with you in my thoughts and heart.

this is terrible, so sad

Rest in peace, I believe all the people who knew You and say good things

I like Benny's idea - if you can, go down to a beach today and have a think about Dimi. I reckon he'd appreciate that as a tribute

A lovely guy and a good friend. He was the first person to mail me and say "what's up? are you alright?" when I resigned from the AIDA Board - and was there for me other times I needed a friend. I feel so sad.

I met Dimitris at the airport on the way out to the Bahamas, and like Tyler, Will, and everyone else involved the last attempt, took an instant liking to him. He was a very keen spearfisher, and I remember his face when we told him that spearguns in the Bahamas are illegal, and that he would have to use a spear and launcher. It was a look of shock, as he had never used that system before, as far as I know. In the end it didn't matter, as he figured it out really quickly. So quickly in fact that we nicknamed him "The Greek Ninja" (technically he was from Crete, but he didn't say anything). He showed us pictures on his mobile phone of the rather large fish that he had caught.

I also had the pleasure of being invited by Dimitris to give a presentation with William Winram and Stavros at a conference that Dimitris had organised out in Crete in May. He was a gracious host, and so enthusiastic about spearfishing and freediving and really wanted to promote both sports on the island. I met a good bunch of his friends, all very likeable people and we all had a fantastic time.

We have lost a very kind, considerate and gracious man and the team are all in shock about this. He really will be missed by many, many people, and our condolences go out to his friends and family.

I have put some photos of Dimitris from Long Island, up here for those that would like to see him.

I can't find any words. He was one of the few in the judges panel who always kept calm during the messy Worlds in Hurghada last year, the only time I met him.

I wish to send condolences. Can anyone provide me with contact to his next of kin?

My condolences to family and friends.

Very sad news. I never got a chance to meet him but as we all can see by the postings here (and on the various mailing lists on the 'net) he was a well loved man.

You will be missed.

I also never met him, but very sad news. Condolences to all who knew him.
