I never realised how lucky I was until the last week or two. The weather has been horrible, a little swell and lots of wind have meant weeks of terrible visibility. I've beens truggling on figuring that at least i`m learning what the surface weather means in terms of underwater visibility.

Many times I literally havn't been able to see the end of my gun, and of course have caught bugger all.

I have a horrible feeling this is the reality of spearfishing in British waters

You're right that poor vis is a fact of life in the UK. Until this year I would have said that the Channel Islands have the best of the UK vis but this year it's been the worst vis here for 50 years. Cornwall is probably next on the good UK vis list.

All of the UK will suffer from poor vis at times and knowing the causes of this is part of being a spearo. Wind speed and direction, tide size and strength, sunshine levels, time of day, season of the year and many other factors all effect the underwater vis.

Personally I like our limited vis. Yes it's great to see 100 foot as in the tropics but the short range of our guns and the sheer uncertainty of it all I find adds to the appeal.

The vis in the UK is 'Shittio' and so is the weather. Good pubs and chippies though.

It seems to me like I`m seeing alot fewer Bass in the very shallow water where I have been hunting, of course it`s possible that because the visibility has been bad I just havn`t been seeing them.....

What are the best types of areas to look for bass in at this time of year ? Should they still be right in the shallows in the weed ?

here it varies but mainly i do dive at shore side bcoz i do not have boat i am not sure the the visibility in here i usually dive in khorfakkan a nice place in United Arab of Emirates. Is there any help you can give how to measure the visibility comparing it with the wind and direction and if there are any tools for that? knowing that i do not have boat

Are you asking how to predict the visibility from the weather report ?

I`d guess it is down to experience, it varies from area to area, I`ve been trying to get out as often as possible and comparing the weather /sea conditions to the visibility so that in the future I`ll be able to predict whether its worth going in.

Where I mainly hunt any waves / wind screw the visibility pretty much instantly and it seems like it takes several days of calm weather to bring it back to normal

I`d imagine you have much better vis out there.


Broke my bad luck and got 2 golden grey mullet and a 3lb bass last night, but then the vis had improved and the tides were better.
