"Visitor messages" feature / tags

Hi,
I am wondering how the new visitor messages section works & how it is supposed to be used. Are the messages public or private (I'm guessing public)? Are these intended to be long running conversations between two forum members that remain up indefinitely or brief exchanges that we delete after reading, or can other members contribute to the discussion?

Also, are "tags" just keywords to help searches?

It's pretty much like the Facebook "wall" system. You publical post messages/comments on another users profile that all can see. Good for sending quick messages that you don't mind others seeing.
