So guys, I need advice on the perfect polespear for Wahoo......
Right now I have fused 2 Manny Puig polespear rear sections to a 7' JBL front to give a 13' spear...... I load it so that I have about 6' in front of my hand and can hit the fish a further 3 feet to 6 feet ahead of that. I recently tried one of Omer's ''Hatori Anso'' hand built carbon fiber spears....light, fast and a bit pricey.
I'm toying with a double tapered graphite (Two golf driver shafts) with a parallel mid section. I think that light is probably faster and as Wahoo are pretty easy to penetrate I can use a skinny tip. Now the big question........do I use a single Looooong band for steady acceleration, kind of like a black powder burning long barrel musket OR a strong double band for more power but risk flex and wobble of the spear.
Any one with experience with these long spears?

I wish i was on a level close to what you are, for i have not such experience to really undertand the depth of those questions, but i would try 1/2" band (spearitco) to 350% with a twist. And if you get a riffe polespear we can mix them and see what happens!

When I tried a long thin band on my Gat-Ku I had problems. Accuracy suffered when the grip point was beyond about 2/3 of the way forward. My guess is that a shorter, heavier band stretched to 60-70% of the pole length will be your best bet. Theoretically the carbon fiber shaft shouldn't bend, but it depends on how thick it is and how much power you put on it.
I twist the shaft as I load mine. Wrapping the band around the shaft gets rid of any bowing. A little practice and you'll automatically twist while loading.
Looks like you got connected there. Should be fun.

Neil,

An alternative I have been thinking about is aluminum over balsa. It would be light and quick. I was told that balsa would make a very good core due to it's shear strength. Basically, use a 1/2 or 5/8 inch T-6061 Aluminum shaft as long as you need. Find a source for balsa dowls that will just fit in the outer tube, and glue in with epoxy. My problem was I was unable to find the balsa, either round or square (which would require a lot of hand shaping).

That's what you think. Since Alaska isn't really a part of America, we really don't have everything you do. ; )

I never have Been able to find any here.
