i have been scuba diving recreationally for about 4 years now
and i just recently got back from a trip to catalina island and while i was there someone was telling me about free diving and how you can take someone with little experience and teach them to hold their breath for 4 minutes!! no problem!! :D
im into extreme skiing, dirt bike riding and scuba diving and this free diving subject intrigues me deeply
so whats the first thing i need to read to get me started and on my way

Welcome amigo. Use the 'search' function for 'breathe up' or 'breath hold' or 'static'. That'll keep you busy for a while and give you some ideas.
And be careful- practice at home on the couch, then be conservative in the ocean. Get a spotter or a good freediving buddy to watch you in the water.

hey mate

Welcome on DB... Yeah even i am not experienced in free diving still i found it way nice than scuba... wish u all best in that

Hi quazimoto, Welcome to DB.

To reinforce Eric, there is enough reading material here to keep you busy for months. Check out the Beginner Freediving thread. Also, there are pages and pages of threads behind what is displayed in each topic, flip though a few and get a feel for what's here.

You sound like you are in good shape, so a 4 minute static should come along fairly quickly, if you work at it.

There is somebody else in your area, who has posted in the last few months. The search function should bring him up.

Have fun,

Connor

Welcome to DB! Get a dive buddy if you can, feel comfortable with progress, don't become an unwanted statistic - lot's to learn, plenty of time, enjoy it mate!

thanks guys
im glad to see i wasnt flamed for being a newb
like the decostop.com members enjoy to do
i doubt those fat cats even get off their asses and ever do some hang time on a deco stop!!
lmfao
and once again
thanks !!
and im stoked to move along with this new and exciting sport!!

Flaming and general crapping on people has never been allowed on DB, so no worries there! We just punt them back to a lesser website.

well that being the case i think i will stick around

i have a couple of Qs
my mom is a pediatrician and she said something about brain damage happening after 2 minutes of not having air

what say you?

Horsehockey! She's correct to a point, it's actually a little longer, but we still "have" air during a breath-hold. If you pass out underwater after your breath-hold, then the clock starts counting towards brain-death etc. Tom Sietas is doing 10-minute holds and he's smarter than the average bear!

Indeed, most docters have heard something at school, coupled with their own fear it often lead to ridicules statements.

I remember that Stig, now also a 10 min static guy, was at a party and a sponsor persisted that it was impossible to hold ones breath more than 3 minutes. Stig took a big bucked, put water and his rubber duck in, held it up and submerged his face for over 4 minutes I imagine to the amazement and amusement of Stig's friends :D.

From what I've been told that after going unconscious, there is enough 56% SAO2 to have the vital organs function for at least 4-5 minutes without damage.

On the other hand, similar to getting drunk, it's not a good idea to BO every week.

And considering age, Bill a db poster has turned 69 and celebrated this with a 69m Free Immersion dive!

It's a helix sport you can do and enjoy for a long time!

Where is Tahoe?

In this tread there are also many useful beginners tips:
http://forums.deeperblue.com/introd...ew-i-have-questions-what-drag.html#post739029

In general the first steps into freediving go pretty quick, with many motivating pb's when training properly. My recommendation is to have many small pb's and be aware of over training. Similar to swimming apnea can be much more exhausting than one would immediately feel leaving the water.

Have fun, and an interesting journey!

Lake tahoe
is a large fresh water lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains of the United States. It is located along the border between California and Nevada, west of Carson City, Nevada. Lake Tahoe is the largest Alpine lake in North America http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Tahoe#cite_note-ltva2-1 Its depth is 1,645 ft (501 m) making it America's second-deepest.

Tahoe is also renowned for its clarity (though that has been lessened in recent years) as well as its very blue water. It would be a great place for diving. One of the local dive shops takes freshwater diving trips up there often. Congrats on living up there, Quazy. I was up in the Tahoe National Forest a couple of years ago and it was just amazing. Welcome to Deeperblue, and dive safe :)

Isn't it also the location for Don Corleone's lake house in the Godfather?

yeah im pretty sure that the mob did/does dump bodies in the lake its the perfect 1600 foot hole
