I had to post this on here as I was absolutely sick at the sight that greeted me on this afternoons dog walk. On a local slip way used by small boat users was lined up, a row of dead fish, 7, yes 7 dogfish, bad enough I am sure that you would agree but also beside them a 4 foot smooth hound, like some hideous marker of angling proficiency left behind by a cast member from 'Hills have Eyes'. I have done a fair bit of fishing in my time and know that these fish are tough and are easily returned alive if your not gonna eat them. I was offended on two fronts, firstly why kill fish if your not going to eat them, to me that's a crime and secondly, the genetically challenged individuals that left the fish in this grotesque row, have done who knows how much damage to the reputation of decent anglers everywhere. Yes I hear people cry, you have just plastered it on the net and damaged the reputation even further, to that I say Damn right I have because these people have no place fishing and only transparency, integrity and ecological awareness can save fish populations now, from the single angler through to the factory ships. As this is a spearfishing forum I will take this opportunity to say one final thing.............. how many spearos would do this, in my opinion not one and there it is, for those who would like to restrict spearfishing, on every level, practically, sustainablly and morally, you would have to leave it to the very end of the list, it is without question, the most responsible and sustainable form of fishing there is, no doubt!!

Well some spear fishermen like some rod fishermen, don't have the same ethics as others, spearfishing competitions still go on where divers simply spear as many fish as possible to win!
Spearing wrasse for pot bait is a common practice amongst certain groups.
I do see your point though!

Pinniped72 I totally agree with your emotions having had many similar experiences over the years. The waste and misuse of our environment is not limited to fisherman of any ilk. And to some extent we are all guilty of excessive consumption of resources. But I can only say that its up to all of us to be conservative and only take what we need. I could not be more conscious of the old adage that 10% of the fisherman catch 90% of the fish. My family consumes about 4 kilo of seafood a week and give plenty away to friends. Sustainability is very obvious to spearfisherman given we can see stocks in an area at a point in time. So if you shoot all you can in an area don't blame others overfishing practices and maybe be conservative and come back next month for the same bag.
