Anybody aware of whats going on down in the Southern Oceans?

Apparently Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace are raising hell with the Japanese whaling (call that Research) fleet and the Japanese are sending their Navy to protect their fleet in Australian waters. What do DB'ers think and especially the guys down under in Aus?

Right! No one's opinion will be changed, no enlightenment will be reached and the rest of us don't want to see the screaming and hollering.

Capt Watson and the courage of his convictions...the man has 'cohones'!

While most folks sit on their couches and watch TV and get online and talk about their love for the Ocean and eat seafood ( order out even)...how many people can put together a group of people, get a ship, travel 1000's of miles to one of the roughest oceans in the world and take on a Corporate rapist and say "Enough!" ???

By the way, these same greedy corporate MoFo's have already systematically removed the ocean resources of struggling and poverty stricken out-island and coastal communities (sea people) that depend on our Oceans to survive -and left them with little in the way of a sustainable source of food. Mostly these sea people live in the areas we pay big bucks to visit and be part of for only a few days over the course of a lifetime, wishing no doubt that we could stay forever. Would we still travel there if there were no local thriving community, culture, tradition and yes - local food dishes? Not one of the consumers at the recieving end of the corporate conveyor belt would ever dream of entering the water on a daily basis, pole-spear or speargun in hand, to gather their dinner. There is zero appreciation for the environment that most of us love and the one that we hope will still be there for our kids. The process has got to slow down - at least for a while. This type of plunder cannot be sustained and very few are gonna benefit and most of us will pay the price. Our Ocean should be there for everyone to enjoy and where necessary, to feed our families. Our Ocean can recover if given the chance and we need to figure out a way to maximize that appreciation for all who wish to experience what magic there is... and that which is the reason we subscribe to DeeperBlue.

For those of you who scoff let me say that I don't speak about this as one who has not seen first hand the damage and effects that our so-called civilized society and the corporate profit mongers have had on our Ocean. For some years now I have been involved in efforts to clean up and decontaminate our environment...its mostly a losing battle. I have seen the garbage on the beaches and reefs and I have rescued turtles dying 'cos of the plastic they mistook for food.Forgive me if I admire an individual like Paul Watson and his crew ... maybe , just maybe he might slow the downward spiral and more people will find the courage to act individually, and then as a group, and then maybe as a country so that somehow our kids can have some semblance of an Ocean that we have grown up with. There is a cancer in our Mother ... are we to leave her untreated, to fester and then to die? What then?

Happy New Year to all ...

Im just going to say this and then let it be

Go Sea Shepard !!!!! Ramming Speed Ramming Speed

At last someone has the balls to do what most of us (Australians ) want to do. RAM THE BASTARDS

Enough is Enough its time to take the Bull by the Balls and give him a good squeeze and see if he comes back for more.

Crusty

Your so right Ricochet, ramming is pointless especially when somebody's gone to the trouble of inventing torpedoes.

...not my style either....forsure. I am doing what I can as an individual....and I think most people that really know about our Ocean are quietly applauding the old seadog ( God knows it's hell down there )...any attention is better than none!
I did not start this thread to argue ( POIDA) , nor do I condone ramming rather my question would be; ..as many people as there are who are into DeeperBlue...is there nobody conciously doing ANTHING? And if you are consciously doing anything, what is it?...no matter how small.
C,mon, I feel like the only one ... B

Good on ya Sarge... and I know you pay to hunt in Africa...that DOES help!

Read my signature. Its not just the whales Its everywhere we all have regional issues as well as global. I get angered evertime a pure pristine stream on this planet gets trashed. Many things suffer and at times are lost. Ive put a lot of time in restoring some of those waters so that maybe future generations will have the pleasure they have given me. When things happen inspite of the villians being warned that it will happen, I put my hands to work and try to educate and rebuild and that can lead to parnerships not alienations. Striking back with a criminal act only hurts the fragil balance that often times exisit to protect a resource. Politics can make for some strange bedfellows. Perhaps that money could be better spent asking those who take to help protect and foster what they seek instead of giving it to the bottom of the sea.

Thgere are no rules down there ...the Aussies made sure of that and for that I thank them. Let the cards fall where they may! B

Cmon Youth Challanged Sarge, you haven't put a bit of whale blubber on the BBQ?

Freediver 81, cleaning the ocean, from all the people that reportedly pee in their wetsuits, you've got your work cut out.

Naaa... peeing in the ocean is eco-fertilization :D

Nah... eco-fertilization is when you drown a few greenies...

Thats about all the good those goons at SeaShepherd will ever do... Make some worms happy when they finally get hung for piracy...

Under the Law of the Sea, by which all nations agree to abide, the Japanese have the right to exploit any resource. Merely declaring a "whale sanctuary", is the legal equivalent of me outlawing chewing gum in China... looks good, sounds plausible, but its aint gonna do squat.

Of course you lose ALL credibility when you refuse to sign up to the Kyoto protocol AND particpate in the invasion of another country merely to kiss Bush's butt.

Australians need to do more to fix the situation at home and less whinging about legal activities in other parts of the world.

Captain Watson is an example of the eco-terrorists that have hijacked the efforts to clean up the planet. As a practising conservationist, who is currently paying out of his own pocket for a study of invasive algae in my local area, I loath and despise idiots like the crew at SeaShepherd. They do nothing but appease their sense if futility and worthlessness by appearing to "do something". The world needs less people like that, not more.:rcard

Shadowkiller - sounds like you're doing something you feel strongly about - AND you're self-funded! Invasive algae? Sounds like a water quality problem. Any chance you might elaborate briefly on the issue that you are trying to address?
BTW... where is Wollowgone? B
