I have a question for the most technical of you. I'm taking part to another forum where there's a sort of questionnaire about the freediving records.
Does anybody have idea about the measures (height) of the water rails used by tom sietas in the 2006 for the dynamic 223mt record and by martin stepanek in 2003 in his -93 costant record. The both were using C4 carbon fins (Plap and Falcon respectively).

In any case I was interested in some information about the use/measures of the water rails. Can really make big difference a 2 instead of 3 cm high water-rail? I've never read nothing about this details in order to the records.

Sorry for the strange question, but I was curious.

ha ha ha! Come on, say it all: you're not only curious, you need the answers to win the contest on the italian forum! rofl
I was about to post the same thread myself, but I was too lazy...However, you may try to check the members' list of Deeperblue: there you'll find both Tom Sietas and Martin Stepanek. They haven't been much on the forum recently, but I think theyìre still able to receive personal messages from Deeperblue. Try dropping them a PM with the question and cross your fingers for a quick response (the contest is nearly to expire, isn't it?).

PS: scusa se ti ho svelato l'altarino, ma è stato più forte di me...rofl

Heilà...I was waiting for your reply dear Spaghetti! I'm not so "newborn" to expect to be the only italian member of this forum. I just tought the members here are from all over the world, so it was too difficult (for my english) to tell the whole description of the italian contest. Anyway it doesn't seem to have been misterious or uncorrect..and my curiosity is real. I had no idea that the waterrails height could be so important in competitions. The contest has really stimulate my curiosity ...you should appreciate my not being lazy like you. The italian forum suggests its self to look for the info through the web, this site looked me good so I asked.

...you should be glad 'cause I will certainly not win the contest (you, enemy, didn't give me any good answer!!), but the contest has definitively made this site win a new member (me!!).
..Probably some clever boy has already dropped a PM to the cahmpions (hopefully not you) and did say nothing to the community. ""I'm working in the sunlight"" instead!!

See you soon

Noproblem really, nothing unfair, it's ok. But funny.
Now let's hope someone to give us the answer to the question

..no answers.. as I expected! ...We miserably failed :-((( !!
Community doesn't seem deeply informed about the waterrails-related performances...or were all the members taking part to the questionnaire??
I'll wait for the official results.

Bye

I have no idea what rails Martin and Tom used. But I am sure about one thing - it is not the rail difference that helped them making those records!

Even if there were some difference in the hydrodynamic behavior, I am persuaded it would not make any significant effect on the total length. Perhaps a few cm, but that's all.

I have C4 Flaps too, but I continuously lost most of the rails - they are too thin and peal off when the fins touch each other in water or in the bag. Presently my fins have only last few pieces of the rails on some parts of the blade edges. However, despite the rail loss I am continuously improving my PB, and definitely do not feel any remarkable difference when training. Well, it does not mean I could not make slightly better improvements with complete rails, but think it is really the last factor that matters.

The rails on my blades are 1.5cm high on one side, hence 3cm in total - and I assume it is the case at most other older C4 fins too. Currently C4 started to produce new rails with variable profile, so the thickness varies over the length of the blade.

Now I do not know if Tom used the same fins at his records, but if you look at some videos, the rails on his Flaps seem to be the same as the ones I have too (2x1.5cm), but, of course, I may be wrong and they may be higher. Look for yourself - check for example the interview with Tom on the video number 04 in his video archive - he is pulling the Flaps from his bag and showing them to the camera at around 12 minutes into the video clip.

On the other hand, other fin manufacturers use quite different type of rails. So for example Stephan Mifsud, who did some record dynamic apnea too, uses (AFAIK) Breier fins. Those have rails with much less height (about 1 cm) and much thicker - they are in fact triangular.

Thanks Trux...unfortunately I only use plastic Cressi fins, that partly explain my ignorance about this matter. Certainly records did not dipends on waterrails only (never thought such a thing!), but the continous evolutions about them must mean something. I don't believe C4 made those changes just for commercial reasons, every C4 product evolution never appeared banal.
Anyway thanks for the opinion, now I'm gonna see the video you suggested.

Bye
