I'm dying to do the beginners course but was just wondering how fit you ideally need to be. I have had a couple of health problems so have not exercised for over 6 months which has left me a bit of a weakling! Am just starting to build my strength up again and would grateful for any advice on activities that would help. :crutchThanks

You should probably ask a doctor for advice before taking on any activity like freediving or training of any kind. I think that makes the most sense. After that call the instructors and ask them how fit you have to be.

You don't need to be the perfect specimen of health, since a HUGE component of freediving is mental. That being said, you should be in decent shape (cardio is good for getting prepared). HOWEVER, any underlying health issues should be cleared by a doctor BEFORE starting any training regiment (especially if you've been injured and are recovering). This sport will strain your body in ways that you most likely have not experienced before. That being the case, an injury could occur unexpectedly and set back your recovery or end your freediving career before it really gets started. A trip to the doctor will put your mind at ease that you are physically capable of doing what you want to do. And having your mind at ease is ESSENTIAL to freediving; if you're nervous about injuring yourself, you will never be able to relax, and therefore, never achieve some of the times/depths that you're looking to reach.
