In class we were taught two things about weighting: First, to be positive with "empty" lungs at the surface and second, to be neutral at around 30 feet.
If I weight myself to still be positive at the surface I'm positive down to 50' or more. As I am looking to spearfish in typically 60' or deeper water this may not be that big of a problem as I should be neutral to slightly negative at the bottom, but it will just take a little more work to get down there.
Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

Thanks

Sweet tooth,

Just weight your self so you are neutral at 33ft, and then you when you are hunting deeper than that you will be negative. If you are positive at 50 feet then you need to add more weight.

As you learned in class you want to make sure when you do a relaxed exhale at the surface you don't sink.

I hope you enjoyed your class.

Thanks Ted. This is Dean and I definitely enjoyed the class, just wish I could have learned to equalize while I was there! I was checking buoyancy with a full exhale through a snorkel at the surface which may be a bit overdoing it.
Still, I suspect I may be positive below 30' even when weighted for a relaxed exhale at surface.
Is that really much of a problem? I may have to work a little bit harder to get down to 60' or so, but as soon as I start up I'll be getting some of that 'free ride' from being positive.
Would that be a good approach for what I'm wanting to do?

Dean

The surface safety test, which is exhale to relaxed volume(like a sigh), and make sure you don't continually sink only makes sure you are not overweighted. It doesn't make sure you neutral at 33 feet. So passing this surface safety test makes sure your diving safe but doesn't mean your weighted properly. The next test would be see if you are neutral at 33ft. Does that make sense?
