Hey all.

Just got into spearfishing after always wanted to get involved. I have always liked snorkelling/ surfing and fishing and I now love spearfishing.

Anyway I have just got a gun recently (SEAC - Twin Thunder 75) and been out 3 times....and caught nothing yet !! But one of the problems i think is that all i have at the moment is a mask/snorkel, suit, fins and gun. And i have noticed that it is hard to stay down for a decent amount of time with no weight belt.

So i have just bought a weight belt, but i am not too sure on what weights to get and how heavy.

I am 12.5 stone and wear a 5mm suit, and at the moment i plan to fish in around 12 - 20 feet deep.

Can anyone help me out on what weight i should have on my belt please ?

Also, so far I have been to Port Quin x2 and Harlyn once (with out any luck). Can anyone tell me of any decent places around North Cornwall please.

My parents have a caravan in Treyarnon, so when conditions are right, i plan to go around this area.

Has anyone else had any luck here ?

Thanks

Start with about 6 kilos for that depth. You might be light at that. Bring more weights and trim accordingly.

You want to be able to lie on the bottom at that shallow depth. When you start diving deeper, the weights would start coming off. IE: If you want to hunt in 50' of water, you want to be able to hover at approx 25' so that you float up from that point.

OK. Cool. Cheers.

Where does everybody get there gear from?

Can anyone recommend somewhere for me to get my weights from ?

Cheers

If you have one, the local dive shop is always a good place to support, because trust me you'll be in there a lot as you get into the sport! Some dive shops sell second hand lead for weight belts, they are like a solid block with 2 slits in them, sure you know what they look like. Anyway that's the cheapest option unless you have lots of lead kicking about and a mould...

Get a rubber weight belt though, I bought a fabric one for a near tenner and replaced it 2 weeks later as they loosen and slip about. Rubber ones hug you more as you dive and your wetsuit and lungs compress, so they don't move. Learn from my mistake for free.

Enjoy, be safe!

Oh crap. Just bought a pouch one off eBay ! Thanks 4the tip tho. No doubt I will find that out too ! :(

If you mean a shot belt - a belt with pouches to hold lead shot - then you will need to buy the shot from a scuba store.
Shot belts are fine, nice a comfortable to wear until you start diving & then they slip all over the place!
Two options ... modify the belt by slipping over some rings of bike inner tube to stop it slipping ... buy a rubber belt & some lead bullet weights from Scott. View Profile: scottwilson
Lead shot is expensive so buying another belt might still be the cheapest option, a lot of us also use weight vest to complement the weight around our waist. I use the Omer vest & that hold lead shot & that is how I know it is expensive !

Keep hold of the belt you got and aways take it with you so if you have to drop you main belt in a emergency you can recover it if you can find it !!!!
