I am off to a friends in West Wales over the bank holiday, they have a boat, we are keen to go spear fishing, I am after some advice / help on suitable locations in the general area, I understand a lot of the Gower may be a marine reserve, any help much appreciated, the area’s my friends have mentioned as easily accessible are North Gower, West Gower (rhossili) or the eastern side of Camarthen Bay. Thanks in advance Jason

Gower can offer good sprearing for Bass and has alot of good ground for lobster and crab. It does have one major problem though. The visibility tends to be average at best. A prolonged calm spell and neap tides can give 3/4m vis but this is not the norm. Gower is also heaving with small boats so always use a dive float. Conditions tend to be much more favourable in West Wales.

hi Brando, thanks for the advice, is there a particular area / mark to head for ?
thanks again
Jason

Gower is not a marine reserve. The only reserve in Wales is an area around Skomer island including Martins haven and the west side of Gateholm Island. The best spearing is on the south coast before low tide. There are slip ways at Mumbles, Oxwich and Port Eynon but you will need a 4wd for the last two. The whole of the south coast can be accessed by foot. The area has very large tides so always check times.

I am planning on having my first go at winter spearfishing this weekend around the gower, time to try out the new suit I got for Christmas! We were planning on fishing around worms head at Rhossili, has anyone fished this or know if there is likely to be any viz or know anywhere better?
Cheers, Spud

Hi spud, I was a student at the uni in swansea for nearly 5 years (most of which was spent surfing/fishing/diving the gower). Getting good viz down the gower is a nightmare and subject to swell and wind direction.

Looking at the tides and surf forecast your best bet is probably going to be Oxwich bay. There is going to be a small swell running which could make things difficult around the worm, which does hold fish on the sw side. However the tides massive and the winds offshore so be careful if you do go there.

anyway back to oxwich, its very sheltered, and as the wind is forecast to be light then swing northerly, it should be dead calm. The point at oxwich holds bass and some flats, plus because its a huge tide the wreck will be divable which is awsome, its bigger than you would expect, with lots to look at and a cheeky lobster if your lucky.

in short if i was going I would try and dive oxwich an hour before low on sat and sunday. Dont park in the carpark, its a ripoff, park on the hill, then after your dive dry off and go for a cuppa/publunch at the oxwich bay hotel which is on the beach more or less, nice food, big woodburning stove/fireplace to warm up in front of. Hope this was of use to you, good luck.
