I'm going to be diving in Cancun, Mexico next week and I need to know what thickness of suit I'll need. 2mm? 3mm? shorty? I'm a bit of a fatty so I can probably get away with something a little thinner but I need to know what to expect. Will the water be warm enough to dive without a suit?

No need to rub it in! :D I shouldn't complain, it has been unseasonably mild this last couple of months (in stark contrast to last year). Still a vacation in Cancun wouldn't go amiss.

When I started spearing, I used a 2mm shortie wetsuit. I managed to spear for about 1.5 hours in the UK Summer (which is not really long enough) and would sometimes be exhibiting early signs of hypothermia when I reached shore :(. But you needn't worry about that:

"Cancun water temperatures are always bathtub warm, varying from 78°F-80°F in the winter months to 82°F-84°F in the summer months. Underwater visibility is best near Cozumel, where it can reach up to an amazing 200 feet. Visibility near Cancun is usually 50-100 feet. In Cancun's famous Cenotes, the visibility often exceeds 300 feet...incredible. "

They have warm water, with exceptionally good visibility and it looks like they want everybody to know it :D

Will you be spearing?

If you're scubadiving or freediving, I'd highly recommend a full 3mm suit. I've been there lots and any attempts to get away with less got me chilled.
Put it like this; you wont get too hot in a 3mm, but with less suit there's a chance you'll get cold. And that sucks.

Have fun :)

Oh that's YOU wally. Didn't notice the name!
Have fun ya farggin bastige!

Take the full 3 and you can wear only the top if it not be to cold. We did this on our last trip to Thailand and it worked great.

Hell yes I will be spearing :D I hooked up with a Cancun local from spearboard and he's gonna take me out. Having a hard time getting him to recommend a suit and I'm thinking about buying one down there... I'm thinking I could get one for WAY cheaper, but I don't know....

Thanks for the info. Looks like this trip is going to kick all sorts of ass :D

lol Yep. I'll see if I can get a 3mm... but Erik, you are an unusually skinny bastid ;) :p

Not a bad idea, thanks! :)

2mm shorty wetsuit will be in the shop tomorrow for me.... $120

Just bought 2 32GB SD cards for the GoPro.....

This trip is going to kick an incredible amount of ass....

Something to be aware of as you (like me) are cold water guys in full 5 or 7+ mm suits.
In warm water, with no pants on, your legs might sink during breathe up. I prefer the horizontal position. Breathing up in a vertical position sucks.

This is true. That said, I'm taking my fiber fins so I will need to wear 5mm socks in them.... should keep my feet a little higher at least ;)
