I have had it with my 2/3mm and 7mm SCUBA suits that flush more than a dorm toilet on Saturday morning. I get cold really easily, I need a suit that fits well. The problem is I am slightly less svelte than I would prefer to be at the moment. I want to buy a custom-cut suit but I am afraid that if I lose the troublesome fat around my middle and chest and the bit of extra around my hips, butt, and thighs then I will be back to an ill-fitting suit. Then it occurred to me that if it's a custom cut suit then the arms, hood, shoulders, and legs should fit me well enough to keep the water out. I could then get a vest to take up the extra space.

Am I right? Or should I wait to get my suit after I lose the weight, or at least see if it sticks around?

Gidds I have had the exact same dilemma. i decided to just get a custom made suit and take the chance with the few extra kgs I want to lose. I have also ordered a vest to wear under, to give me extra warmth on days I need it. I figured that if I waiting until the weight went, well that could be months or longer and in the meantime I'd still be in my old ill-suited triathlon wetsuit.

You could also perhaps take a few mm off your measurements around those areas that you think will lose the weight. I guess the risk is there that you aren't getting a suit that is made to fit you perfectly as you are now. It also depends on how much weight you are anticipating losing and whether the amount is significant enough to change the fit of the suit.

Maybe email the place you are thinking of getting your suit from to see what they recommend. I've ordered mine from Elios and I had heaps of questions for them about which suit would be best for my needs in terms of durability, warmth etc and found them very helpful in advising me. If a custom made suit maker wants your order, they'll be helpful when it comes to questions.

If you feel confident you can loose the few extra pounds of bioprene, Picture the measurements you will be in a few months, and works towards it.

Study your diet. I believe many people are fat because they in fact suffer from a lack certain nutrition, keeping them hungry. Also eating because of stress and distraction, to fill an emotional void. There are many reasons. But often I hear women complaining about their figure and equally to their passionate discussions about their appearances. I can assure you, as a man, that a well developed interesting character and smile will do much more for me. So Ladies please put those mirror and beauty case hours in some character shaping activities such as freediving, traveling, exploring. And become not only be more self confident but also be a much more interesting conversationalist and life partner.

Ok, sorry I went a few miles off topic

If you cannot wait to order your custom suit.
Choose a medium or low density super stretch nylon neoprene, and order a few CM short on the places you expect to shrink. The stretchy material allows enough flexibility for a few extra pounds.

Actually I know of women who also feels she needs a few pounds before she will order a new suit.

Loosing weight is not only about getting full nutrition, but also also when to eat. Eat right after exercise. If you feel hungry, then you first need to do something active. Jogging with a dog for instance.

I'm interested to hear what Elios' advice actually was.

Thanks for the input. Most of the fat is from a health problem, sedentary job, and stress. All of that seems to be under control and I am doing much better this year. I don't have any illusions about getting back to my teens or 20's physique but I feel like I can tighten up the waistline, it's a health and well being issue as opposed to a vanity issue, I'm already thinner than I was when I got married and wear WAY smaller clothes than most American women
The other problem with the fat is that I am WAY buoyant. I am wearing 12 pounds with a 3/2mm and hood in warm water. I don't even want to get in the cold spring or put on my SCUBA stuff, I'll need a boat anchor to get down!

Hi, are you using a 3-2 with a seperate hood? Thats what I did for over 30 years, the water always poured in down my back-just recently I got a free-diving suit from oceaner with the attached hood--lots of manufacturers use the pants -top with hood attached approach and it has made a HUGE difference to the level of comfort--no water ingress always toasty and warm, a custom suit always has to be best, but just having a suit with an attached hood helped me a lot--cheers.

Yes and I HATE it because climbing into the 3/2mm isn't much easier than climbing into the 7mm (which I've had since I was 16, it needs to GO) and then when I put my arms up to streamline, which is how I prefer to dive and swim, I get about 50 gallons of water down my neck, which doesn't help when I get cold just looking at the water. Right now the suit I think I will get is the 5mm nylon out/nylon in spearfising suit from Oceanos and I am tempted to use it as my SCUBA suit too since I sometimes dive wet in the summer (mostly a dry diver if on SCUBA in FW, wet in the ocean in summer). I will probably beat the heck out of said suit so I don't want to get the slick inner just yet but if I like it I will order another one with a slick inner surface. Anything will be warmer than my current suits.

What if I get all muscular? What's that going to do to suit fit?

A stretchy 5mm will do nicely, especially when it's made to size. I've had no experience with Oceanos, but I have with Elios, and their tailoring in bang on. Super stretch nylon lining will be durable and comfortable. Since there more option like Neoprene brand and type, consult Elios for the best choice. They can make all sorts of customizations to fit your free and scuba diving needs. I've used a 5mm freediving suit for scuba (opencell inner, nylon outer, and it works very nice and is warmer then my old 7mm "semi dry" scuba suit. The lesser buoyancy made me drop all the scuba weights, and I'm enjoying the speed and ease of the flexibility together with my long fins

Don't dig too much in the what if scenarios. If you dive a lot a good fitting suit will be very nice, and it's a joy to work with good equipment. Making a lined suit a bit smaller is very doable. With some patience you can do it yourself. So buy a suit that fits you now.

I was just curious because I was shaving my legs and discovered that I have a big honking calf muscle that wasn't there before. I think it's from me spending a lot of time in the gym when work gets boring I am presently trying to con my husband into measuring me for my custom suit.

Gidds, I agree with Kars. You could let a lot of "what ifs" get in the way of you getting a lovely, well made custom suit. I also think that Elios is the best option and you could discuss with them the best type of suit and material for your needs that will fit you know and as you trim down/add muscle.

Have fun getting the measurements done!

Conning your husband to measure you? - I thought that's what are men are designed to do, you know to size up women? LOL.

Just forgo the desire to 'look' good from time to time, just get a nice suit and spend many hours in the water and enjoy a good meal right after. Get freediving, get relaxed and comfortable, the rest will follow before you know it. I like to see a happy relaxed freediving Gidds sharing the water life with her husband.

Something about me spending a substantial sum of money on toys for myself and when is HE getting a custom-made camo wetsuit?....it all just becomes noise after awhile

Well I think freedom makes for more interesting and loveable characters. I do not recall people say that the want a complete slave to boss around. That's not living with a person. I know a women who recently expressed her worries her man was too ordinary, kind of dull and uninspiring, though she's pregnant of him... my advice to her is to not to try and control him, but rather appreciate courageous tendencies and acts. As a former friend I recall her attempting to force me to change. And that didn't last long as bad tensions mounted and blame game for moral domination was played. The easiest way to destroy a relation. I think we should remind ourselves from time to time that we're together because it's fun and voluntary. At least until parenthood in my opinion. So a fear of exploitation is a clue that needs our attention I think.

ok, I need to stop now, I'm no relation expert at all, and I'm just rambling some gibberish.

Surely Elios has great materials in camouflage for you too, maybe you and him like the blue camouflage patterns? Though I must say I like the blue smoothskin because the shapes and curves come out so much nicer.

Thanks miss Mer for you appreciation of my often strange humor, though I'm sure you know I was merely stating some elemental facts Though I'm sure women are no better observing men Is this mysticism of the other sex attractive or what?

I'll buy him a wetsuit if he'll go diving with me again. That's how we met after all. I get mine first though! Now if I could get him to freedive properly and not overweight or exhale in order to dive deeper than me! :headThat if for a different thread though.

What I find very romantic is to do underwater dances, ask him.
I hope you can ascend the domination game from time to time.
