I'm going to Catalina Island in July. What mm wetsuit should I wear a 1.5mm or 3mm?

The water temperature in Avalon was 61F today. While that is warmer than my usual dive spots in Monterey, it is still chilly.I recommend a 5mm. I used a two-piece 5mm Omer at Catalina, and I was warm and comfortable. If all you have is the 1.5 and the 3, you may want to consider layering them.

Thank you BatRay. Do you happen to know how the diving in July? I normally dive northern Cal and wear a 7mm scuba suit. I'm looking at buying a good two piece for Nor Cal and a different one for warmer waters.

Are you referring to Catalina diving? It tends to be between 62 and 68 degrees, according to various websites. My dives there were during the cooler months.

Sounds like you're developing a comprehensive suit collection. Have you had any suits custom made?

Everyone I know wears a 5 mm year around, or maybe a 7 mm in winter. The temperature can vary widely, even from one end of the island to the other. One time I dove a spearfishing meet at Catalina in mid-June and the temp was 57. Its warmer than normal for February now, but it could reverse direction.

Spearfishing should be good in July. The white sea bass will still be around, and the yellowtail should have shown up by then.

@BatRay no I don't have a custom suit. I was looking at buying a 3mm suit for July. @Bill thank you. I've never been so I wasn't sure how the fishing would be. Any. Recommendations on weights? I use 22 pounds with my 7mm scuba suit. I'm buying a spearfishing suit for my trip.

Unless you have a high tolerance for cold, I can almost guarantee that a 3mm suit will be insufficient.

I hesitate to give a recommendation for weight. It can vary so much for different body types and different brands of rubber.

BTW, the spearfishing season is off to an early start. A couple of weeks ago, one of my dive buddies got a 50 pound white sea bass and a 43 pound yellowtail on the first trip of the year on my boat. That is the mainland in the background. White sea bass are being taken all along the coast, even if I haven't managed to get one in three trips.
