I would gladely appreciate some info from deep freedivers using carbon bi-fins !

I am now using Gara professional HD to freedive up to -60meters. I find these fins very powerful but when exceeding 60m they just use up too much energy.. I would strongly recommend them for spearfishing though (even down to -40m)

I need carbon fins for deep freediving. What model and stiffness would you recommend ??

My height is 1m93 (6ft3) and weight 90kg (195lbs) and I train a lot my legs.

Thanks

Max

Thanks !

What stiffness would you recommend for C4 fins ? 25, 30, 40 ??

I read that for deep dives you need softer fins, 25 for example. But I am worried that it would be a waste of potential as I am already used to these hard workouts with plastic fins !!
I might find 25's tooo floppy! Are 30 and 40 stiffness efficient for +60meter dives ??

Thx

I don't know much about carbon fins, but I want to comment on stiffness.

The deeper you go, the more buoyancy you loose, the more negative you are. If you got soft fins, if you got short fins, you'll overpower these and consequently waste energy.

Example, I used a soft monofin in combination with a 5mm suit and plenty of weight. At 40m at the turn I pushed of the bottom and overpowered my fin, it felt like a towel instead of blade. So I needed to adjust my technique, slowly build up to speed.

Also I suggest you wear some soft and or small fins and make a deep dive with the same suit and weight. Use a line because you may get a bit scared and want to go up in Free Immersion.

In short for deep dives medium to stiff fins are best.

Now because you're spearfishing, being in the water for hours, swimming at the surface too, you have to take that into consideration.

For me that means that I want a generous footpocked to blade angle and a soft blade.
Now because of the your 40m+ depth I would choose a medium stiffness, especially because your tall, strong and have a considerable water displacement

Furthermore I think I would choose glassfibre over carbon because it's stronger, standing more abuse in multiple directions.

Those are mine considerations, I hope they are useful to you.

At the moment I have Gara 2000HF fins, but would buy the above once I got some new income. The gara's are nice but lack footpocket angle.

Big guy as you are and dives +60 stiffness 25 is too floppy.
C4 I recomended 30 of stiffness. Exellent fins. Footpocket is so comfortable.

And most important of all -they look damn good!

Thanks a lot guys !! Your replies have guided me well. I will be going with C4 mustang 40's as I am diving in 5mm and need the power at depth.

Regard,

Maxim

sorry to put a downer on C4 but mine were warped from the factory (never got an answer from them) and now have cracked width wise mid fin. A buddy just dropped his mustangs around last night for me to see: bigger width wise crack closer to the footpocket. I will post photo's if anyone cares to see them.

In my case the fins were used a lot, but always rinsed and kept out of the sun.

I won't be trusting C4 again for a while. I can't imagine what would happen if one of those cracks appeared, or was more severe, at depth. Just my double-whammy experience. YMMV.

Ive had my c4 mustangs for about 4 years no cracks but i dont take them as deep or to depth as often as azapa. But ive givin up on mine because i got used to gara 3000 that i had started using for day to day pool training (new pool has a 3 foot end boooooo for my monofin) anyway ive become annoyed at how sluggish mustangs are for turning or changing direction due to those super deep channels they really are an up and down fin. I just got spierre pure carbons with omer stingray pockets and so far i love them. I have had the plastic nuts pop of the screws before on the mustangs during dives and thats really all thats holding the blades on as there are no tendons. I do think mustangs are greatfor certain dives just know your gonna sacrifice some of the manuverability you enjoy with the garas
