The story is as follows.

Funds to pay the ISP that hosted the site came from periodic fund raising drives on Freedivelist. One member acted as Treasurer and set up a bank account for keeping the funds, and also set it up so that the ISP could automatically draft the account for fees. It was all on autopilot.

Then for some reason that we can't figure out, that Treasurer just dropped off the face of the earth. He used to post on Spearboard fairly frequently, but quit a few months ago. He doesn't anwer emails and when I call his old cell phone, I get a message that doesn't sound like him. When I leave a voice mail, I get no reply. He and his father were scheduled to come dive with me for two days last summer, and just didn't show up.

So with no one to goad the members of Freedivelist into a new fund raiser, the funds in the account were just gradually depleted and ran out, and the ISP shut the site down when it was no longer being paid.

The FDL is currently discussing what can be done to recover the site, but it depends on backups existing.

Trux,

thanks alot... i found what i was looking for...
ohh and Bill let me know when and if they need contributions

The Freedivelist has been discussing its future over the last couple of days. There is talk of going to a VBulletin format like this one, or staying email based, or God knows what. But in the interim, someone coughed up money, and I'm told that the freediver.net web site is now back up at least for a month, during which I guess it can be mined for data.

Bill and others,
I set a spider to crawl and download the entire contents of the site. I'll compress the site into a RAR set and archive it. At least the content won't get as readily lost to time.
Let me know if there's something you need and can't get from the site while it's still up.
With luck, it will remain up for some time.
Chip

Well - as I said - any help I can give let me know. I'm willing to help host anything for Freediver.net for free on our server if necessary or if you are moving to a vBulletin setup consider coming on-board as a hosted forum on here.

Anyway - just let me know how I can help.
