Thanks for the nice article. I find it fascinating how lowering CO2 through hyper ventilation simultaneously removes your discomfort and removes the very mechanism for liberating the stored oxygen you need to sustain a breath hold.
It's certainly a death trap that warrants more articles in this vein.
Did any of you see the awful post on CNN last week about poor Natalia? The "journalist" correctly linked hyper ventilation with blackout, but wrongly suggested that this was not only the cause of Natalia's tragic accident, but also that this is the de facto technique used by freedivers.
