What is this, and how should I cook it?

Saw several of these swimming around. This one was about 13-14" long.

I couldnt ID it on any F&G web page. anyone know?
also, any tasty recipes for the filets?

I should have added that info. Woops. Its from southern california, i think i figured it out though. I believe its called halfmoon aka black perch aka blue bass
 
Treat it like a perch if it really is a halfmoon. If it's a opaleye, there is a large body of opinion that says use it to grow better roses but not all agree. In any case, scale, dredge in seasoned flour or cornmeal and pan fry. Serve with green salad and dry white wine.
 
Scale it, fin it, score it, salt & season it. In a large baking pan lay it on a bed of sliced onion. Top it with a couple of pats of butter & thin sliced navel orange. Bake it at 450' F for 15 minutes. Taste it. If bad spit it and throw it to the cats. If not eat it and hunt for another.
