Before you laugh at me, I'm very new to spearguns, as in just bought my first and haven't used it yet new
Now my question is, what is this for?

I can't see it. There is a little thing that looks like a photo with a red X across it. Nothing opens when I click on it.

I think this one should work , it's kind of like a little lever in front of the trigger but it's really loose and just flops back and forth

It's hard to tell what I'm seeing but it's probably a trigger-activated line release. With the shaft inserted into the trigger mechanism it should be sticking straight out. Then when you pull the trigger and the shaft departs, it flops forward and releases the shooting line that was wrapped around it.

Does your shaft have shooting line on it? If not, you can still test it. After you snap the shaft into the mechanism, you should be unable to push that thing toward the muzzle. Then take the shaft out, and and it will flop forward.
