Im looking at a getting a sit on top kayak. what kayak do people use? do you go for all out angler spec or are the lower priced ones suitable. i shouldn't think i would paddle much further than 5 miles. quite a few on ebay but wondering if i would be over spending if i bought one of the flashy angler spec boats.

I use an Ocean Kayak prowler elite 4.5 which i found great.I also used a Perception Freedom and a Moken 10.But I have to say the prowler is just great in terms of speed, stability and control!

I've got the new Perception Triumph 13. It's long, fast and stable, with a decent size rear tank well. It holds all my spearo kit no problem and has a big front bow hatch for dry storage. It's similar in spec to a Prowler, but cheaper.

I think it depends on how much time in the seat you plan, and if you might try towing a lure too...
The basic angler spec yaks are super. Also imo the scupper pro is one of the best sots there is and perfect for spearo use.
If weight is an issue then look at the venus 11 which is 9 kg lighter than some of the angler spec yaks and still good for paddling if you dont have lots of angling gear.
If you are deciding between different angler specs then it probably comes down to your own preferences for hull shape, fittings and features, and weight. Imo of those three weight is everything -especially if you have to paddle an extra few kgs 5miles... Stability between the different models is unlikely to be a key issue, they are all 'stable', but depending on your ability you may factor that in for one model more than another.
Last thing, some manufacturers use higher sides than others, getting in and out is easier on a lower sided yak. Imo the ocean yaks are generally better for this.
If you think you will add a gps/sounder then some models are set out with a recess in the scupper for the transducer.
Good luck and make sure you let us know how you trick it out... :)

Thanks for replies and messages. lots of helpful advice. im leaning towards a tarpon 120 with a few extra bits. ive done alot of kayaking in the past, and like the idea of trolling for the days when i turn up and the vis rules out diving. Now to keep an eye out for a good deal.

I have been using a Tarpon 120 for a few years now and find it perfect for my needs ,i often just go for a long paddle ,fish with a rod and line as well as for diving ,if you are used to kayaking then they will seem slow compared to sea touring kayaks (sit in type ) but are so much more versatile ,especially for getting in and out on rocky shore lines and will carry alot of gear as well -good luck !!
