Hello hello, i'm an free diver from Cape Town just got my open water 1 and going to start scuba diving.

Can anyone tell me if a Camo wetsuit (spearfishing) is better than a black wetsuit when it comes to sharks?

Hi and welcome,

Definitely some SA based people hanging around on DB. :wave

As for the wetsuit question: Sharks use a whole array of senses when hunting, with sight being just one of them. So from a sharks perspective I don't think it really makes a difference whether you wear camo or not. It will know you are there even if it can't see you.

Appreciate the feedback landshark!

I've noticed there is a strong diving community in CT and SA in general.
Do you know of any societys or groups that can be joined where boat/shore dives are co-ordinated, or where people just meet upfor a good old snorkel / spearfish?

Welcome.
You could try Steve @ Animalocean for boat trips diving with seals / sharks etc.

Yeah, SA is a GREAT place to dive... we are totally spoilt by the diversity available to us.

As for diving groups etc.

Scuba: There are quite a few dive shops in and around CT. Most of them do dive charters. Groups I have scuba dived with is alpha dive centre (021 854 3151 scuba@alphadivecentre.co.za) and duck and dive (021 511 2468 scuba@duckndive.co.za). Or you can contact Tony Smit at the South African Small Craft Association (021) 856 2254. He's based in Gordons bay and does training and charters. Very knowledgeable guy and super passionate about CT scuba diving.

Freediving: You can contact Jacques or Anthony at freedive international in CT. capetown@freediveinternational.com. I did a SSI freedive course with them. They do freedive courses, training and also some fun executions around the peninsula.

Spearfishing
: A couple of clubs around CT. You can try Blue Spearos: bluespearos@gmail.com or Hugenote Spearfishing Club : 084 2309122 speak to Dawie.
