Where do you measure the distance of you shot from?

I am newbie in this field and i do it automatically most of time it works but always i am trying to get as near as i can from the target

Tried it - hence my comment. Experience is great & discussions with folk like Bill who are sharing 40-50 years of experience is good too.

Missing fish because you underestimated the range has more to do with the need to improve actual real life skills and not having another discussion about it perhaps. Also being familiar with your gear to the point of just knowing if a fish is in range without having to waste half a second working it out is pretty much a must in my humble opinion.

If you are going to insist on measuring range then from the tip of the spear to the fish sounds the best.

Don't know 'bout yall but I'm gonna lie anyway when I retell the story. I'll increase the range, size of fish, how deep, and how big the taxman I chased off was. All in proportion to how many beers are consumed and how good looking the gal at the next table is...which seems to get better as the aforementioned beers are laid to waste. :friday:chatup
