I have been freediving the north california and oregon coast for the past 6 years and shortly after begining to dive here I realized that a knife was more of a snag hazard than it was worth... so i quit carying it. I have a renewed intrest in carying a knife while freediving to dispach bigger fish than I have been spearing. where do you guys keep your knife to keep it from snagging when you are swimming through thick kelp? Also what is a good low profile knife for freediving?

I have it on my left thigh like a thigh holster, but am considering a smaller one on my wrist.

I had a suit with the same pocket that mako has but most every knife should have a holster, if not itll eventually end up poking though. i have a suit that is a 2mm that looks just like the mako but branded with a different company, and getting jabbed in the thigh was no fun.

on my calf in betwwen legs, hardly any chance of a snag there.
Not only would I never dive without a knife, I would never dive with out a spare knife on my arm. 2 knives minimum, not for fish, but to cut me out of trouble if needs be!

I'd try and stick it anywhere but i'd always want to carry one. I'd go so far as to stick it between my top and bottom of suit if absolutely no where else to put it without it snagging. As long as you can get to it.

I carry mine towards the inside of my thigh. It moves round occasionally with finning and bumping it. It also snaggs a bit of kelp and string weed now and again if I'm crawling or swimming through it, but is in an easy enough fix just to reach down and either pop the knife out to release it or just lift it over the handle.

Everyone will have their own preference but my opinion, right or wrong, is that what ever position you find yourself in you would normally always be able to reach your thigh (inside or out) with both hands. Even if you are tangled full stretch or in a ball. Maybe not so your ankle, and if one arm is out of action (maybe stuck or tangled) you'd hope that its not the one you need to get your knife off your other arm with! You can get a hand to most places :mute but when was the last time you chewed your toe nails??! :yack.

I carry one on my left forearm and one in a pocket on the outside of my left thigh.

Notice the bungee wrist loop on each knife. I consider that essential so that I can't drop the knife and lose it, or so that I can drop it if I finish cutting kelp and want to grab the fish with both hands without wasting precious breath putting it back in the sheath.
