Where to by bulk bungee?

Im looking into making my own blue water bungee lines(float lines) Anyone know if its possible just to buy the bungee in bulk? if so where?

The material is called Norprene. I searched it on Yahoo and found a retailer for the material fairly close to me who was willing to sell 50 and 100 ft rolls. Cost was .97 cents per foot. I have all their contact information at work and can send it to you later.

What are you gona use for the inner line? I found some 1400 lb test braided spectra line on ebay for pretty cheap.

That would be awesome, as far as the inner that was going to be my next question.

I was thinking something like that. Im not sure of the percenages should be as far as amount of bungee to amount of spectra within. Is it different per manufacturer?

I dont think I would need more than a 30 or 40 foot line, I was even thinking of just making "shorties" for fish in the 20 to 70 lb range. I think making them my self will be cheaper than spending $100 on a 20 foot bungee line!:duh

the material will stretch 3 times its length. Thus if you only wanted a 25 foot bungie you could load it with 75 feet of spectra line and that would max out at 75ft when stretched out all the way.

Have you used this stuff before?

I talked to one of the Lady's at the company and she had never heard of it being used for spearfishing before.

I was just wondering where you found out about the stretch and if you knew if this stuff has "memory" or not.

Im thinkng of using the 1/2 with the 3/8i.d. seeing as it will be easier to pull the spectra through.

I do use it and yes it does have memory, I got the information on the material from the book "Blue Water Hunting" bh Terry Maas. If you have not read the book you really should.

It is not only a great read with epic stories and world record fish but very useful technical advice from guns to the way freediving effects the body.

If you have an fish store like for salt water aquariums by you, they carry the same stuff but in 1/4 od stuff, real thin like for fish tanks because it is ozone resistant and hold up to salt water to. you can get a 4 ft piece for a couple buck and yank on it and test it that way, It is what I did to check it out before I dropped 50$ on a roll.

Actually dude I use bungee as my main line with a couple of feet of dyneema as a leader...been using it for a few years now (a trade secret...shhhhh) and its amazing, seldom lost a fish (except muts-few & far between- and those don't count)...but yes to answer your question I also use it on a HBA floatline (dynema core) attached to bungee with float at the end...we're actually working a a blue water float when finished I'll post pix of the set-up.

I also looked at that link settingsteele sent. Looks like useful stuff but I kinda like the idea of the 1400lb spectra as a back up It could just be my ignorance though. any reason why you (settingsteele) prefer the regular bungee?

I also will run a short 6' bungie off my shooting line then to my regular 100 ft float for WSB and yellowtail.

any reason why you (settingsteele) prefer the regular bungee?

floatline is tube with dyneema inner core...that goes dirctly to my shaft, and the other end is attached to a 10', or 20' bungee that is threaded thru my fish stopper float and the end of the bungee has a fist size float attached to it...when I shoot a fish the shaft goes with the float linethe next line which is the bungee which serves as a buffer (from fishing tearing loose) and also the stretch back and fourth tires him quicker, if he gets to take the float (fish stopper down) then as he tires bungee is fed thru ratchet until he's brought to surface...its all fine and dandy to go 1400#, but remember if the line attached to your shaft (shooting line) is 400, 500, 800# w.e. thats the limiting link, get it compadre

OK, Sorry for the type-o but I guess multi tasking is not one of my stong suits.

but could you send me some pics of your "trade secrets" I am trying to picture it.

I rig my breakaway from spear shaft comes double wrap mono. then from break away either 75ft of norprene bungie with Spectra core or 6 ft of bungie to my floatline to float on surface.

Just send me the pics before I over analyze the whole thing!!!!!!!rofl

Thank you, Im still a little confused though. You said that the shooting line will be the limiting factor but when I looked at the link you posted the bungees were only rated to around 500lbs for the bungee that is 5/8 thick. Im just trying to figure out if im missing something or if thats plenty of tensil strength. If I do use this stuff I think I would like the 1/2" rated at 325lbs. 5/8 just seems a little fat. What do you think?

your not really using the tensile strength of the actual norprene your tensile strength is in the core i.e the spectra core, like mine is 1400 lb tensile strength, the bungie is just there to slow the fish down and provide resistance. Your bungie never actually would be stretched past its 3x limit due to the spectra core stopping it before it makes it there.

OK...you have your gun with the shooting line attached, to gun and spear right?...whats the pound rating on it? Mine is 400# & 800# anything I have attached "above" that line (as in a floatline, bungee etc) don't matter if its 1400# or 16,000# the weakest link is the 400# & 800

Another factor is the dynamics of the stretch. The line (actually more like a leader of mono or dyneema) is 400# to that I have a 2mm bungee that we tested to about 200# before we went chickenshit and stopped (didn't wanna get BSlapped by it) so we can safely assume that 2mm bungee will hold a 200# fish...<or> right? but that stretch absorbs an incredible amount of shock ( kinda why mono is still so popular with H&L under certain circumstances...it stretches...so it actually can hold more weight than its rating, by the same taken the stretch serves the same function as a drag on a reel- albeit the float does to) which often is what snaps the line connection b/t arrow and gun, rather than putting a 6" band bungee (passe), I just add a 2-4' 2mm bungee which serves as the line and shock absorber...I think I'm gonna start a thread on this soon since I've had quite a few emails/PM on how I set it up...once my camera is up I'll post some pix/thread on the set-up.#...hope that sheds some light

you jumped me, but yes you are right the core is in this case the stongest link...but the truth (without any technical data to back me up...so let rephrase and say IMO:t) that bungee will "probababably" hold whatever fish that 1400# spectra will...take for example bungee jumpers a bungee rated to 500# you jump its all good...you tie a 1400# line and jump whatya think will happen:blackeye

Ok, I think im getting the picture. I understand everything about the bungee with dyneema core #1400. I was just unsure of the tensil strength of the straight bungee that settingsteele showed me. Now it all makes sense.

I could picture two blokes trying to find the breaking strength of a bungee. Painful consequence.:blackeye
