Hi, as far as filming underwater is concerned without artificial light, what is the difference between the 960 version the HD and HD2?
I want to film underwater while spearfishing using the head strap.I currently have an early GOPRO which has a camera function of 5MP but I don’t know what the video footage resolution is and its not on GOPros website, any ideas?
From a point of view of putting the underwater footage on youtube, as its not put on in HD, will I gain anything by buying the HD or HD2 rather than the 960? Are the amount of recording you can do with a SDHC card installed all 2.5 hours?
I know the HD2 is meant to be better in low light but is there any other advantage?
My current gopro footage is not that clear & I think I need to upgrade but cant see the point in having high definition footage if youtube wont take that anyway.

An important decision is what lens to use. I think you should use a glass lens as the water doesn't bead on glass like it does with plastic.

I use a Hero 2 with a Blurfix lens and have it set to the maximum resolution possible. The battery goes flat well before the card is full. I am delighted with it above water, happy with it to -15m and it is OK deeper. All the cheap cameras need lots of light

The HERO 2 will give better images, will work better in low light and will create better Hd video for youtube.

Guys what about red filters?Worthwhile or not? Does the blurfix take red filters?

The blurfix does take red filters but i doubt you will need them.
There is a significant difference in the HD2 and original in terms of low light performance, however imo the HD2 is still rubbish in low light. I went from Canon G9 to HD2 and the difference in night time footage plus torch is massive. If low light is really important then can you consider a bigger lens?

But what size is the Canon compared to the GOPRO? The whole purpose is to have it on a headstrap for spearfishing.I would guess the Canon is too big for that?

Canon is way too big. Buy gopro hd2 for excellent video quality. (the best)
And diving case with flat lens for gopro. You can't go wrong.

Really don't think you'll need a red filter for the gopro - really depends how deep you're diving though. I found a bit of tweaking in your editing program will give you nice results too

If not in an urgency, I would personally wait and see if the announced Sony Action Cam is not a much better choice for us...
Here is what I just posted to a related question:
Sony Action Cam comes with a Zeiss lens and I suspect better low light capabilities. But more importantly, it has a much better shape than the GoPro for UW uses. Well, actually for a lot of uses, I'd say. I Just have one issue with it for now: It is not out yet...
Well, actually, I have a more important one. It seems like it has a curved front lens on the casing and as such would have focus issues like the non-dive, flat-glass casings for GoPros. Hope they fix that before they ship them.

Not much online yet, but here are a few links:

Oh, also they seem to be less money than GoPro.

Bought a gopro HD2 with a mask mount from subprof.com.Whats the best viewing software and editing software. Also Youtube or Vimeo for uploading footage?
i view the footage on Apples Quicktime but its a bit juddery and not very smooth.Dont know if thats to do with settings on the camera or the software on the computer?

Congrats on the HD2.
So, you are on a Mac, it seems. So am I. Quicktime will jitter a bit once in a while. Especially if you are not on the fastest, most spec'ed out machine. But it's fine and wont show in an export. I'd say get used to iMovie, which should be on your computer already and then if you ever wanna step up to Final Cut Pro, it's an easy path to follow as they a lot the same nowadays.
Can't help you with the youtube vs. vimeo. I like the look of vimeo more and I think some years back it was rumoured to have better compression, better looks. Not sure now. For just sending links to friends, both are good, but for randomly getting hits, I'd expect youtube to have more visitors.

Thanks for the info guys.I actually bought my GOPRO HD2 off e bay new and it was significantly cheaper.I found out afterwards it is a grey import and thats why. Will still be ok as long as I dont have to send it to GOPRO for any repairs etc as they wont touch it!I'll just have to be super careful with it.
No I dont have MAC i have windows vista.I downloaded GOPROs studio editor or some such name and this seems to haver lessened the juddering.I am reliably informed thats its down to my steam driven computer rather than the GOPRO.I have added a class 10 SD card in high capacity together with the extra battery which makes it a bit bulkier but still ok.
watch out for me at next years oscars!! : )
