I am looking at getting a monofin for recreational swimming and to start building my strength for diving this summer. I was wondering what a good monofin would be for a beginner. I am looking to spend not much more than a 100 dollars if possible. And where do I order it from?

Does anyone have any recommendations for me. Note: I have normal leg strenth and am fairly phisically conditioned. I would like a fin that I wouldn't "outgrow" quickly but one that would be good to learn on.

Thanks in advance.

Hey AB Diver,
I was recently in the same situation, looking for my first purchase for a monofin, and like you I was restricted by budget. After looking around online for quite a long time, searching everywhere for all the types I could find I eventually decided to buy the LeaderFin Sport monofin. It is only 89 Euros and I have heard good things about it from quite a few people for a first buy.

If you contact LeaderFins they will be very helpful and answer any questions you may have. They answered all my questions and helped me figure out kind of fin would be best for what I wanted to use it for. First rate customer services.

I have yet to receive it, as I think it is still being built, but they are trying to make it for me in time to take to Barcelona on the 13th June, but I will let you know what I think of it. Personally I can't wait to get it, I'm looking forward to using it, I'm so excited! :D

Hi AB Diver

Just to confuse you... ;-) I am sure that Mbanks' advice is really good, but I wanted to let you know about Waterway Fins... if you can find a retailer near you, otherwise the freight cost will be too much. You can check out their website www.finswimworld.com

I got mine - a model 2 medium hardness - in January through a Danish retailer, which cost me around 130 dollars. It is my first monofin and I love it, just love it. Many of my club mates have the same model, and it is recommended by one of the best Danish freedivers, if you want an "off-the-peg" monofin.

I have just received my second monofin - exact same model but larger foot pockets to use with socks.

Good luck with your search
