Some advice would be much appreciated!

My girlfriend is going to SA in a few weeks and has kindly offered to bring me back a new speargun. I like the look of the Rob Allen guns. I am in the north of scotland and mainly spear pollock, cod, mackeral etc. The water quality is very clear here (particularly on the west). I currently using a cheap gun at the moment and want to use this opportunity to get myself something a but better.

Like I said, I like the Rob Allen guns and was thinking something about 80cm long with a 6.5mm spear. Does that sound about right? Also, I have never seen an open muzzle - could someone please explain the advantages/disadvantages and are the muzzles interchangeable?

Should I also look at Rabitech?

Sorry for all the questions but I spear on my own, buy all my stuff off the net and have never seen another speargun other than my own!

thank you for your help.

Andrew

Mate if your girl friend is going to SA then get a gun and get a spare gun while she's there, with the exchange rate you cant go wrong. Get a few spare spears too, I think you'd be after the Rob allen sparid but just email rob and he'll pretty much make up what ever you want or if you tell him the type of fishing your doing he'll recommend what he thinks will be good. I have 2 rob allen guns, still yet to use the tuna but I love my 1m Caranx, some people think they're heavy but in the water its all the same, and they are built like a brick Sh*t house so you know it's going to last. I can't comment on rabitech but I'm sure they are much of a muchness. Get your girlfriend to bring back anything else you need cos with that exchange rate it'll cost you peanuts!

By the way if you have very clear water why not get a slightly longer gun, the added range could prove to be useful?

Thanks newbie, I was planning on getting some spares too.

Any advice on this 'open muzzle thing?

open muzzle vs. closed muzzle is a matter of personal preference. i prefer closed muzzle but have switch most of my guns to open muzzles because of shark fin shafts.
with an open muzle you have to wrap the mono around your spear or in the pins so that the spear doesnt flop around on you even with the bands loaded.

its not very complicated, and once you get the hang of it, you should be able to do with your eyes closed.

some say that open muzzles allow for clearer and easier aim as you dont have the muzzle bridge obstructing the view of your speartip and shaft. other than that, with practice both become second nature to you.
hope this helps.

ps. if your gun is an open muzzle, you can always convert it to an open muzzle without having to buy a new muzzle piece. just use a sharp saw or leatherman and make clean cuts on the bridge where it meets the channel and then sand-paper any rough edges.
if you follow the link you can see what it should look like when you are done

Hey Mishu,
Did you pick up that Freediver when you were last in Dubai? How do you find it?

andah -

I have TWO carbon Rob Allen rail-gun's coming in a few more weeks...Inlaws coming to visit from S.A....:head...:chatup

Like Newbie said...GET TWO and some spare stuff while your at it! The exchange rate is awesome...Plus they are MUCH cheaper IN South Africa anyways. Basically it's almost two for the price of one!

I almost bought a Mares Cyrano Pneumo to use this summer but I could'nt pass up TWO Rob Allen guns...So here I sit patiently waiting! :hmm

The guns I ordered are pretty short but I had them made from carbon anyways since it was soooooo affordable!

Bgill, you are going to love your carbon Rob allens!!
The Cyranos are pretty sweet though!

Andah,Closed muzzles are simpler and sometimes faster to reload,
Personally I would stick to the original closed muzzle.

Thanks for all your help. Spoke to Jeremy at Rob Allens and he was amazingly helpful. Getting a Sparid 80 with closed muzzle and some spares.

Now its going to be a long wait..........
