White Seabass gun

Re. 3-bands (raised by Bill earlier), Mako, unusually(?) for a railgun maker offers a 3 band railgun - perhaps recognizing Americans' preference for power [see our discussion weedwackers, lawnmowers & boats several years ago for justification of that comment]. I would be surprised if that didn't include support for 3x5/8" (i.e.3x16mm) bands, I would think that is what is on show here:

1-band seems to be quite enough for the UK though.

we all know daryl is a great guy and makes great guns (thanks for the new handle daryl) but most of us also recognize that riffe guns are world renowned too. there could be all sorts of debate whether one shots better than the other but imo there is no debate in terms of quality and yes, i know daryl has a better warranty.

what you do get from daryl is a personal relationship and with riffe you don't.

btw, i made a few guns myself and i can tell you that if daryl makes "about 300 per year", has a day job and has time to do everything else in his life he's either much more organized than most of us or he's gotta have an "elfs" or two in his shop.

don't want to start a new fight, i just want to give a different prospective.

back on topic, for wsb i would go for a mid handle in the 55'' or so range for yt a little longer, maybe 60" (i think bill's 57'' gun is ideal for both). the main thing is, you will be much happier with a mid handle when you're making your way through kelp but for yt a long euro is fine.

ok, i'm good too. back to the topic.

i known people that have taken and continue to take wsb with 120cm euros but for me it just doesn't make any sense. i mean swinging a long gun in thick kelp is not easy, it's much better to have a gun with the handle forward to use as a pivot point and your other hand on the butt to point the gun at the target. most of the shots will be relatively short and the target relatively large so the argument about euro guns are easier to aim doen't really apply here. a mid handle will have more power than a comproble lenght euro because the mech is all the way in the rear and will feel smaller because the handle is forward.

for yt a long euro is fine because the fish in most cases are not in kelp so swinging the gun toward the target is not an issue but there will be a time you wish you had an extra band and a thicker shaft and i don't know of many euros that come setup that way.

if you're on a tight budget look for a used mid handle riffe in the 50-60'' range, the "hawaiian" is 50, the "no ka oi" i think is 56'' and the "islander" is 62''. these guns are pnetifull and you could pick one up cheap, bring it over to moris shop and have him cut and rethread the shaft for you as well as buy one of his spectra sliptips (shaft overhang including the tip should be 8'' max), next have him make you a new set of 15mm thick bands (3 of them) and you're going to have a gun that shoots great, is perfect for what you want to do and will get a lifetime of use out of it. buy or make a cheap 75-100' polypropoline float line (home depot sells everything you need) and i'm sure you could have the whole thing ready to go for about $500 or so.

if money's no object buy a 57.5'' wong.

A friendly note from forum staff.

Since some comments made here have brought to bitter controversy, I've cleaned up the room from any comments not related to the WSB gun topic. This was not meant as censoring. It was just to get rid of the animosity.

I sincerely apologize to everyone involved if I had to edit or even to delete some of the posts. Apologies, really. But hey, we didn't really need the crap slinging, did we?

Now: here's a nice, fair, polite, insightful white seabass gun discussion.
