Hi there everyone,

Its been a while now and I have been meaning to post to tell you all what I am up to. Many of you know that I am on a gapyear and have been working in order to travel, however I don't believe i had really disscussed what I had booked.

I was due to depart the UK on the 29th of April for South Africa to spend 3 weeks with White Shark Projects, to do some work with Great White Sharks, before travelling to a game reserve for another 3 weeks.

However as I have just logged on to tell you all I have just read the deeperblue news article entitled "South Africa Boat Tragedy". I am extremely shocked, and concerned for those involved, and I guess will keep you posted on whether I go or not.

For the time being though If anyone knows anything or has any advice, it would be very very much appreciated.

Huw.

Hi Hughie
i can imagine you must be! Speak to Jeff Ayliffe (bluecape) - he can dispel a lot of your fears and clear up any urban myths.

I think it's wonderful what you are doing! Remember, it was an accident, it could have been any operator, anything, anywhere.

Go have the time of your life. Cape Town is a magical, wonderful place. xxx

Hi there Sands,

I spoke with Charmaine who runs the project over there, and she says that things are well with all things considered. It looks like the placement will still be going ahead, and so the thumbs are up for me to go. I really can't wait! I'll be sure to keep you all posted with pics and things, and i'll let you know how I get on :).

Its my first time travelling alone, and first time in South Africa, so i'm a little apprehensive, but I think thats making it more exciting :D!

Huw.

PS: just for the record I didn't mean that I no longer wanted to go because of what had happened, just that I was unsure whether or not the company would be operational, but as it seems that they are, then all seems to be a go ahead :D

Indeed have a good time, crack on my boy and make sure you get some picts to share with all us Working types.
Nnnnuuuurrrr bloody students with there bloody gap years not that I’m jealous at all… :):):):)

Ahahaah yeah, good to hear from you boys! Feels like ages since I was here on Deeperblue! I just ordered a deeperblue tshirt, so I'll try and get it into a picture :D. Hope all is well with everyone!

You must be looking forward to Guernsey now right? Not too far away now! By the time I return then the UK spearing season will be well underway, so thats a bonus :).

I'm just trying to figure out if I should take my spearing fins, or if I should buy a smaller pair of scuba fins instead... just thinking luggage wise , anyone got any suggestions?

Sands, I guess that you must travel a fair bit with fins, do you just usually put them at the bottom of a hold all??

Huw

hughie my scuba fins go in the bottom of the bag and right in the hold :)

I spoke to my Mum today, she said that they had severe sea condition warning for days, no swimming etc etc and that the company still took the boat out nevertheless. Apparently lots of people up in arms about it :(

Good luck Huw, i'd love to do what you're about to do! I was in Fowey recently - lovely place mate.
