Hello everybody,

I am making a report about freediving and I would like to hear why you like to freedive? So if you would like to help out I would be happy. Just give some reasons and maybe point out the most important reason for freediving. Maybe describe it shortly in words.

Thanks in advance

Best regards

Martin

OK, well, I'll limit it to 3 answers while trying not to gush too much.

1. Connect with the underwater world and the sea.
2. Learn about and improve yourself.
3. Because it's fun and therapeutic.

Hello Martin these are my reasons:

1- Enjoy the underworld.
2- Relaxation after life pressure.
3- Improve my body performance (Muscles, lungs etc...).
4- Catch fish (In spearfishing case) to eat.
5- Meet new friends.
6- It is a competitive sport.

All the best in your report...

Being in the arms of the water, held by the movements of the kelp and the fish that are in it. The simple pleasure of finding the food that will feed you that evening. The feeling of slowing being moved by the tide and the not knowing of what might be around the next rock outcrop or on the next sand patch. The freedom of movement as its just you and the water and the fact that anybody can do it if they have the right mindset.

Ever had a dream where you could fly like Peter Pan? I did at about 4, fabulous experience and so real I was very, very pissed off at my mom for suggesting it might be a dream. Freediving is like that dream.

Well I don't freedive technically at all, but as my name suggests I troll about under the water at my local reefs, looking at everything it has to offer. This year I inted to make it a more formal sport, hopefully with the help of a course with BennyB.

So I'll put my answer into two categories:

Why I freedive now:
1) I feel more at peace with the world underwater.
2) I love to see what the ocean has to offer.
3) I enjoy the activity of swimming etc.

Why I want to take it up as a sport :
1) I feel it would be very enjoyable given my love of the water already.
2) I want to get even MORE out of the water.
3) I have pushed myself in several sports already and had some amazing moments (think cyclist over mountains etc) and feel pushing myself underwater can only be a perfect blend of two passions.

I freedive because it's something I love to do. I also love music - it could be said that my two greatest passions are music and freediving. As well, I like to ski and although I'm competent on the piste, I'm a far better freediver than I am a skier, the main reason being that I never skied when I was a child.

Growing up was spent partly underwater. At the pool I would dive and lie at the bottom of the deep end on my back or on my stomach and see how long I could stay down. Same at the seaside. It's important to remember what we loved to do when we were kids...

All apnea disciplines are pleasing to me with perhaps the exception of statics but I do practise dry statics a couple of times a week. I enjoy the grace and rhythm of both depth and dynamics, the slowness of the glide which propels my body and the feeling of freedom during neutral and negative buoyancy.

The healthy aspect of freediving shouldn't be neglected. From the moment I began training in earnest the benefits have been evident. I'm healthier, trimmer, more confident and sexier than before (oh yay :D). Isn't it grand that the older we get, the better the chances are to improve aquatically? Freediving beats wrinkle cream, any day!

Finally, for me the link between freediving and singing with regard to breathing is interesting and helpful. To sing long phrases, perfect exhalation control and relaxation of the diaphragm are essential.

Its my only way out of stress and problems in life. a way to reboot my self with nature and its feels like to be one with nature.....

I actually outline why I got into free diving on my website here. Just click on the Why Freediving link.

It's been a journey for me finally coming to a head recently. It's awesome!

Ok Wade. Nice webpage you have there. Maybe I should come to NZ to freedive. Do you have any Freediving Schools there where you can take AIDA courses?

i like to freedive because it gives you a pure & unfiltered perspective of the underwater world, it is fun :) , it is therapeutic, it is a great sport to learn about yourself and your mental & physical abilities, it gives you a sense of freedom, and it brings you together with an amazing tribe of people.

cheers,

Hi Martin,

I haven't got involved with AIDA just yet, probably not for at least another year, but NZ does have their own AIDA website which is located here: http://aidanz.co.nz/

It's a great website with a tonne of information. Hopefully you could find what you're looking for there?

Cheers!!

Wade

Gather food for dinner, you can swim much faster than with gear. Don't get hung up in weeds/kelp. Can sneak thru small areas and can quickly get upside down and you can turn quickly.

The Abalone police get kinda nasty when you don't.
