Why is deeperblue more of a community than other dive forums?

I realize that, but I was trying to be discrete so as not to be labeled a Communist.
I'm afraid that a portion of our population thinks that whatever America does must be right. I worked as an instrument of American policy for 20 years, so I know better.
As I recall, during that trip to Santiago, I stayed in a hotel right across a square from the Presidential palace. Does that sound feasible?
I have this faint memory of waking up in the morning, looking out of a big picture window across the square at the snow-covered Andes in the distance. Since I was an 18-year-old kid from Florida, which had no mountains and no snow, this was a big deal for me.
You have a unique and interesting perspective on politics and American policies Bill. I love to discuss world politics and policies, but those discussions are often in the theoretical sense and don't really involve "boots on the ground" experience. If I ever make it out to the West Coast I'd love to glean some of your wisdom over a pint or two.
Well, all I can guarantee is the quality of the pint, but I'd welcome the chance to pontificate.
I found a wealth of information when I first came across DeeperBlue, that and folk happy to help point me in the right direction. I had so many questions - some unanswerable in retrospect - their patience was saint-like in most cases. Some acted as mentors.
I do enjoy the international breadth of the forum. It provides variety and gives different perspectives. Local knowledge for fishing & spear fishing is invaluable - but there is "more than one way to skin a cat" and it is interesting to see how equipment & techniques have evolved in different areas. Also, people travel abroad a lot more these days. The forum is not bland, there are some really diverse characters contributing different perspectives.
There is also an impressive amount of expertise available on the forum. Whether discussing medical conditions, decompression, freediving tables, ear clearing techniques, boats, timber treatments/laminating, dive computers, spear tips, fish migration, crayfish traps, kayak fishing/diving, recipes, etc., etc. Also you get a chance to exchange your experiences & opinions with others - ask which snorkel is good for spearfishing and you'll get years worth of experiences and perspectives you never thought of.
I consider many members friends now, although I have not met most. Some have become good friends over the last few years, exchanging tips, ideas and humour.
