In a sense, why does it have to be either

a) Rope
b) weights
c) fins
d) weights

etc

Why isn't there a discipline that just says, go take a breath, dive as deep as you can without any help and let us see who goes the deepest?

Thanks in advance for answering, just find it strange, there is no "pure" form

SAFETY. They wouldn't know where to look for you when you surfaced, if you did surface.

Ok what about just being connected to a rope but swimming as deep as possible without Fins?

Please understand that for some of us (instinctly competitive) this can be REALLY dangerous!!! I found out in the scary way by undergoing the "squeez at 82'. I briefly panicked and reversed course like a little girl before heading back up. And of course I was wearing a scuba mask. I could have EASILY suffered eye trauma and/ or baro trauma. I'm so grateful that I am now certified. Always stay educated!

I haven't kept up with world record attempts, but in competition you need to be clipped on to the dive line. They can then throw a weight off the back of the float, bringing you up in case you didn't come up by yourself. again, safety. If you must, go do it on your own for a pb. Just keep in mind that Natalia Mulchanova, who totally ruled women's freediving, eventually failed to come up
