Will my fins work?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.

The fins i have are a body boarding fin called "CHURCHILLs" they are short fins(Not much larger than my shoes) good for quick bursts of speed (For catching waves) but for long distance they kill your legs.


Will My fins work for using a polespear in and around jetty rocks? or should i get some long fins?

 
No you can't spearfish with those, especially if you wear a weightbelt or anyway for swimming longdistance without using your arms.
You need longfins (Omer Millennium, Cressi Gara 2000 or Sporasub Instinct are very good and unexpensive) or a pair of good snorkelling fins like the Cressi Pro Star or a good medium length fin like the Imersion EAzure, which are both unexpensive as well.
Dive safe: safety first when you're in the sea.

Any fins will work. There are still places in the world where people make a living with a pole spear and NO fins at all.

For many years I used (from 1978 until 1994) I used the same fins - they were mfg'd. by White Stag and they were heavy rubber fins about 18 inches long. I was too cheap to even consider purchasing the newer stuff. When I finally lost one and purchased some newer fins, I was really suprised at the increase in performance. It wasn't long after that, that I bought some long fins (Cressi).

I still use my Mares fins for some things, and my Cressi's for others. Things like: how deep? difficulty of entry/exit? Current? diving goal? lenght of surface swim? etc... affect my decision. My Churchills are reserved for body surfing........
 
Yes of course you can swim, freedive and hunt with no fins at all. But come on let's agree on the fact that it's less effective, more fatigue and potentially more dangerous too.

Will they work? Assuming very shallow water and you are familiar with them, of course they will. Bigger fins will work a lot better. Longfins are probably your best bet, but a good pair of scuba fins, like jetfins, are just as good in some, limited, circumstances. I use a spread of fins from churchhills to carbon longfins. Each has its place.

The whole purpose of long fins is effiency. So to answer your question - yes your body boarding fins will work but you will use a lot more energy to move the same distance and if you need a quick increase in speed you won't have anywhere close to the same capacity as with long fins.
 
well unless you were a pearl diver in a previous life, i dont recommend them, sure anything wilkl work, but i dont think youll have a great spearfishing experience with those, especially if you intend to wear a wetsuit and weight belt...
if you decide to go the "au naturel/survivor" route (i.e. goggles, speedo, polespear) give them a try maybe youll like them

I think that ill give my fins a try for a few dives and if they are that bad ill buy some longer fins.

What are some good brands for long fins?
 
be careful about the current: it can be a serious issue with no fins
