My friend Willie Mahin came from Maui to the West Coast on business, so we worked in his first trip to San Clemente Island, and my first of this year, along with Dave Ness.
Willie shot one white sea bass, 6 big calicos, two halibut, and a barracuda. Its too bad we couldn't find him a yellowtail to round out the catch.
I even got a white sea bass- the size was nothing to brag about, but I had blown a shot at a much bigger one earlier, so was hungry.
The water was clear and blue, 64 to 66F, and we saw a lot of white sea bass. Willie remarked that they seemed more spooky than when he was here last year and got two of them at Catalina, and I have to agree. We saw so many fish to end up with so few.
The photo shows just four calicos, but that was before he added two more to the haul. The largest was 7.5 pounds, and the others were not much smaller.
Not bad for an out-of-town kid.
