I've used the Rob Allen wishbones with the plastic beads on them before, but they are fairly expensive so I'd like to buy bulk dyneema/spectra and make my own wishbones. But I don't know what diameter to buy (or where to buy it). What is a good diameter for wishbones for a sharkfin spear? I'll be loading two bands on at least one fin, does that make a difference? What about for a notched shaft? obviously it has to be thin, but how thin? I was looking at this since its fairly cheap, what do you think?

on a side note, have you ever bought bulk rubber from hammerhead before? I'm considering it because its cheaper, but everything else from hammerhead is a rip off so it makes me suspictious that their rubber would be a deal. or maybe everybody is ripping people off for rubber.

I use 3 mm Spectra for shark fin shaft wishbones, and two wisbones easily fit on one fin. Its probably too thick for slots through.

sweet, where do you buy it from?

I buy it from Masahiro Mori. He doesn't have a web site, but you could email him. It costs 30 cents per foot. I've never purchased it specifically for wishbones, but I have it on a few reels, and I have plenty of left-overs. I'm assuming that he will sell smaller quantities though.

just to throw this out there, i have taken to collecting bands when people break them, especially riffe bands. i take the wishbone out and reuse it. they are almost always 99% perfect still. they are 3 mil i think with some kind of fancy knot instead of a bead. the absolute best ones that i like are rob allen 2mm ones, they have a black tear drop shaped plastic bead on top of the knot. i shoot a riffe euro, mostly and it has mini shark fins, so the 3 mil wishbones work, but not as well as 2mil. and the string RA is using is a really really tight weave. it doesnt look like dyneema really, but i guess it is. i have been using them for this whole season without even the tiniest bit of wear. if you are using notched shafts, you should use stainless cable with crimped beads wrapped in shink tape. i tried using string on notches and almost immediately saw wear, i tried to file the edges of the notches to make them duller, but it still made me nervous. to be honest, i like the u shaped hard wire wishbones on my notched shaft gun, the ss cable ones, dont quite lock in as well. plus they seem easier to engage with my ridiculously tight 20mm bands on that 65" jbl magnum(3/8 shaft, hits like a sledgehammer!!) any way i guess my point is that you can get wishbones for free if you keep your ears open. you can see if they are messed up or not so why not?

ah, excellent. actually, that gives me an idea. could you use braided kevlar for wishbones? I have a whole reel of it after all. but its pretty old, at the bare minimum seven years old, probably more like twelve. but would it still be able to hold that much constant pressure?

I have those RA wishbones on my notched speargun. I filed down the notch and it works really well. I think you can buy it in bulk without the bead on it (cheaper). I linked to it at the top, i think its the same stuff. I have a bunch of those beads sitting in a tin that i've been hanging on to on the off chance I could replace the dyneema. good call i guess.

I'm going out on friday so I just got some thick braided nylon line that's probably 300 lbs. and made the bands that i need. I don't expect it to hold for very long, but hopefully it will get me through december. I'll be checking it every five minutes on friday though.

I bet you could. There is nothing magic about wishbones. I doubt that its been losing strength over the years. Why not try it. If it breaks, then you can try something else.

That 3 mm Spectra is almost overkill. I think it would last through two or three sets of bands, but I still use new stuff when I make new bands, just because its cheap and easier to be safe.

Hi,

Its no secret that dyneema is used extensively in the yachting and netting business - you should be able to get rolls of the stuff at low prices. Clearly the netting manufacturers will be cheaper!

Cheers
