I was wondering how big of an effect working out before you try your breath hold has an impact. About a month ago i hit my PB 5:01. Today i worked out about 3 hours ago, I got a pretty good session in, Worked out hard. I just tryed holding my breath, I only got to 2:40 about. I was very dissapointed. Does working out effect your breathhold time that much? I havnt pushed my self in a while, just messing around in the pool.

What type

Hi,
What type of work out ? sports(what kind) or freediving or ... ? please explain more.

Working out as in, Arm, Legs, Back, just for body building
Freediving as in Recreational, breathholding static dry....

I think it is different for different people. Working out before static/dynamic training has no bad effect for me.

A heavy weight workout would substantially lower my static times. Both workouts take energy, and you used up a bunch shortly before the attempt.

On the other side, remember that training isn't always about a pb. Training is about learning to hold your breath. A short breathhold when you are tired is likely to do as much as a longer one when you are rested.

I'm also doing body building for years, and apnea for one year, then I can say something :
A work out just before a hold has really bad effect (it's obvious!), but for anothers :
- Some hours ago : decrease it about 30 sec.
- One day ago : not a sensible effect
- Generally : If it doesn't have a good effect, I think there isn't bad ones too!
But for active apnea(like DNF), body building makes you and your muscles tired and may decrease your results.
