so what's up with Yoga and Freediving? do I have to practice Yoga in order to become a better Freediver? well in my opinion I'd say it's not like you have to, but Yoga can definetly provide amazing tools in order to improve our performances, plus these 2 activities have so much in common...I invite you to read this personal reflection I wrote:

"Yoga is the settling of the mind into silence."

During the sixties there was a frenchman (you surely know about him ;) ) named Jacques Mayol with this new idea of combining breath hold diving with an ancient discipline unknown to the western world which emphasizes on mind and breathing to achieve physical and mental welfare; this discipline is known as Yoga. He became the first human being to reach more than 100 meters on a single breath.
Hatha Yoga: 'Ha' is sun. 'Tha' is moon. The symbolic of twin energy forces which exist in everything. Hatha Yoga is the foundation of Yoga. It concentrates on Asanas (postures) and Pranayama (breath control). By performing Asanas one is able to attain steadiness, strength, health, and lightness of the body. Hatha Yoga is a Self-Realization through strength and health. Hatha Yoga- union by bodily mastery. Raja Yoga - union by mental mastery. Hatha and Raja Yoga complement each other and form a single approach towards liberation...same as Freediving. Yoga brings a state of receptivity and awareness that works perfectly with breath hold diving, not to mention the comunion between mind and body that we learn from this wonderful discipline and becomes a powerful tool under the water while holding our breath.

Prana is the energy everywhere...

Prana: Energy - Yama: Control. Ancient Yogis believe we are surrounded by particles of energy floating everywhere and the more we can absorb from them the more energy we can obtain to improve our lives and everything we want to do. Air is energy and Pranayama is how we can learn to obtain more from this energy and even control it. Breathing is the essence of life, it's on every single thing we do and we can do it all better if we learn ho to breathe the right way. Freediving has an undeniable bond with this discipline since you must learn how to breathe in order not to breathe.
