Hi Guys,

I have been thinking about getting us out and about to dive in the real world.
Some recreational diving either in some inland sites, Wraysbury or Vobster Quay or indeed in the sea.

I know a skipper who is a tech diver and has a boat, he does diving trips out of Newhaven.
As we are now in winter, the sea is a bit unreliable, though diving from the shore can still be very rewarding. There is also the chance of game gathering as the bigger lobsters and crab come shallower at this time of the year.

I know of a good site in about -8m (depending on the tide) near Newhaven that we could also spearfish, I have a portable hot smoker so we could eat our catch on the beach!

Despite some bad press and sometimes misinformation, spearfishing is a very sustainable way of catching fish.
Only this morning on the BBC news I have been watching the disgusting sight of up to 60% of net caught fish (including prime Cod) being thrown back into the sea because of the EU fishing quotas and every year there are thousands of tonnes of fish discarded in this way.

The inland sites are fun to do. We can get -34m at Vobster and -11m at Wraysbury. Unfortunately Stoney Cove are not allowing freedivers in, which is a big shame.

For this kind of “out of season” diving, a good suit is essential. A scuba wet suit is not really up to the job as we spend time relaxing, breathing up etc. This is when it can get quite cold, but to let you know, I was diving at Wraysbury one New Year’s Day in 3c of water and stayed in for 2 hours in a proper 5mm freediving suit with no problems.

Further away is Nice, warmer too and easy to get to. A great place to dive with C.I.P.A. All through the year they do daily apnea dive trips out in the Bay of Villefranche. EasyJet can get you there and back for about £60. I used to go there just for a weekend and get some great diving in, including some no limits diving from the RIB.

Please let me know if you feel interested in any of these suggestions and I can plan something.

Simon.
